@barstoolWSD This is why there is no Foxborough Patriots, East Rutherford Giants/Jets, Orchard Park Bills, Landover Commanders, Arlington Cowboys or Santa Clara 49ers.
@barstoolWSD No. When the Bears flirted with moving to the same suburban site in the ‘70s, Mayor Daley made that threat and it was empty. The municipal government that’s no trademark on the city name.
@SeanTPendergast A football team plays 8-11 home games. The location of the stadium doesn’t matter like it does for a baseball, basketball or hockey team.
@kstateman14 The site they’re building on is literally walking distance from the Chicago city limits. You can almost see it from Soldier Field. It’s closer to downtown than Arlington Heights.
@clayharbs82 Chicago was never a financially viable option, for the exact same reason the Giants & Jets don’t play in NYC.
Should have made AH work.
But as a lifelong Bears fan, the Bears being less than a mile outside the city limits will change my relationship with the team not one bit.
@TheTonus The Bears aren’t moving. Start with that. They’ll remain incorporated in Illinois. Offices and practice facility in Illinois. Do most of their business in Illinois.
They’re building on a plot of worthless land in an industrial wasteland that’s so shitty, IN can give it away.
@anjewla90 Plus, Indiana is a red state that much prefers to spend money on corporate welfare for already uber-profitable business than on frivolous things like education, health care and infrastructure.
@anjewla90 Indiana has worthless land to give away and make tax exempt.
Anywhere the Bears would have built in or near Chicago would be valuable.
This is the exact same reason the Meadowlands exists and NY Giants/Jets play in NJ.
@albeleombq Indiana has worthless land to give away, and Indiana is a red state that is thus not averse to corporate welfare.
The site the Bears were going to build on in Arlington Heights is very valuable. Thats why they can’t give it away or make it tax exempt.
@albeleombq There is no “safety” concern. 😂 They’re moving to a shitty industrial wasteland literally less than a mile outside the city limits as opposed to the upper middle class suburb I grew up in. And it’s happening for the exact same reason the Meadowlands exists.
@LoganDobson Almost no Bears fan I personally know cares about this move one way or the other. I live on the north side of Chicago. This will be a shorter drive than Arlington Heights.
And it matters even less to the 95% of Bears fans who rarely if ever go to games.
@Sam_Federman No Bears fan I personally know cares about this move. Changes our interaction with the team not one bit.
But idiot Republicans celebrating it are blissfully ignorant of why the Meadowlands exists - and it’s not NY government.
@KyleGAdema Unheard of! Like the East Rutherford Giants and Jets, Landover Commanders, Foxborough Patriots, Orchard Park Bills, Arlington Cowboys and Santa Clara 49ers.
The Dallas Cowboys have never played in Dallas. The Kansas City Chiefs have always been in Missouri.
@MarkAVargas No they haven’t. Bears will remain incorporated in Illinois, have their team offices and practice facility in Illinois, do most of their business in Illinois.
They’ll just be playing their games a half mile outside Illinois.
