OUT NOW!
In this open access article in LAP, I argue that Chile's market-driven, unequal welfare regime (including reforms by Lagos and Bachelet) is key to understand the 2019 uprising. I use Polanyi's concept of "countermovement" to explain it

According to some sources, Kim Stanley Robinson based this dialogue on previous conversations he had with a PSL member…

With all the talk about socialists in office at the local level (#Mamdani) & municipal socialism, it's helpful to note the limits of state-management by the Left https://t.co/AQY9T0uXMZ
🚨Out now! In this #OpenAccess article in @LARRLASA, I provide an overview of the social and political phenomena that gave rise to libertarianism and led to the victory of Javier #Milei in #Argentina. It's based on a review of 10 recent books on the topic https://t.co/3YrlEXQs3Y
Something extraordinary is happening in Argentina: the fans of two futbol (soccer) teams came out in support of retirees, against vicious cuts by the Milei government. Retirees and fans were repressed by the police, now dozens of other club fans will come out next week
We expect @SesameWorkshop to uphold our shared values of fairness, transparency, and respect by recognizing our union and collectively bargaining over our working conditions and the terms of yesterday's layoffs.
UPDATE 🚨: As LAPD were about to make arrests, all of the police officers just … left. I’ve never seen anything like this. Hundreds of police with zip ties, and all of them have just left. No arrests, protestors shout in victory as police leave the area.

Doctors in NYC are ready to strike!

There’s a growing rift between the Venezuelan govt and Petro—one of the few Latin American president sending a representative to Maduro’s inauguration—around the new wave of detentions of left/center-left organizers. Maduro is increasingly isolated.
El Frente Democrático Popular de Venezuela no es una organización delincuencial y es movimiento fraterno del progresismo colombiano. Sus miembros estan siendo detenidos.

Residents and fellows in Philly have had enough of ridiculously long work-schedules, inappropriate tasks, and meager wages. They want a union and they’re ready to fight for their rights!
Here’s an interview we did with one of them

After 1 year of bargaining with Providence execs and NO meaningful progress, today we announced we are striking on January 10th.
At my hospital this includes the IM, Med-Peds, Palliative care, & OB hospitalists, and the Prov-employed OBGYNs, midwives, and ALL the nurses. /1
I remember when NYC subways were covered with Shen Yun ads. They said “China before communism” showing a colorful, magnificent dance performance. Turns out Shen Yun relied on massive unpaid labor, justified on religious grounds, to amass $266 M in 10 years.
It’s a great metaphor
