Because the US government relied on neoliberal economists, who (in service of Wall Street) insisted that all of that cheap money should flow to the most profitable sectors, following the dogma of the "free market".

They said the government can't "pick winners", and instead private investors and corporations would "allocate capital more efficiently" (not by investing in fixed assets, but by juicing their stocks).

Infrastructure has notoriously low return on investment dragged out over long periods of time. Venture capitalists and private equity firms wanted high ROI in short-term cycles of a few years at most. So that's where most of the money went during the ZIRP period.

If you want good Infrastructure, you need state planning and state-directed investment of "patient capital", as Chinese officials call it. This is why China's socialist system -- based on public ownership of most banks and investment firms, with enormous state-owned enterprises in the construction industry -- has excelled in infrastructure development, while US infrastructure has deteriorated and 95% of US corporate earnings have gone to share buybacks and dividends.

Wall Street won. Main Street loss.

In a recent interview with Al Arabiya English, International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan revealed that he, ICC jurists, and UN personnel have been subjected to direct threats targeting their families after pursuing war crimes cases against Israeli leaders.

The coercion intensified following a formal letter from 12 US senators explicitly warning Khan that targeting Israel would prompt Washington to target him and his relatives.

I thought it would be bad.

I had no idea it was THIS bad.

No wonder Gaza killed what little credibility mianstream media had.

In NYT, Israel's right to defend itself was invoked 99 times. Only once for Palestine.

On CNN and MSNBC, it was invoked 755 times for Israel. But only 8 times for Palestine.

Emotive words such as slaughter and massacre were used frequently when Israelis had been killed. They were NEVER used in print when Palestinians were killed.

In Ukraine, 262 children were killed in the war, and it was mentioned 4223 times.

In Palestine, more than 10,000 children were killed, but it was mentioned only 3632.

Sanctions are not an alternative to war; they are an even more deadly form of unconventional warfare.

Western sanctions killed roughly 38 million people over 50 years.

The US government has imposed sanctions on approximately one-third of the countries on Earth, including more than 60% of low-income nations, according to a 2024 report in the Washington Post.

A peer-reviewed academic article published in 2025 in the leading medical journal The Lancet concluded “that sanctions do kill: economic sanctions imposed by the USA or the EU were associated with 564,258 deaths … annually from 1971 to 2021, higher than the annual number of battle-related casualties (106,000 deaths)”.

Maybe future generations will understand the colossal gift Germany threw away with Vladimir Putin.

A Russian leader who lived in Dresden for years, speaks German, whose daughter was born in Saxony, and who repeatedly offered genuine partnership and friendship to the German people. Around the turn of the millennium, there was a real chance to combine Russian resources with German engineering and build a powerful, nearly untouchable alliance stretching from Vladivostok to Lisbon.

Instead, short-sighted and corrupt German politicians sabotaged it all, aligning themselves with those who would rather see Germany and Russia locked in a devastating conflict.
What could have been a historic partnership was tossed aside for political expediency, and the consequences are still unfolding.
