@WhySharksMatter Wow. Great communication by changing the forum and misrepresenting the point of the discussion. I'll bring it here... The point was that the graphic used is misleading by not factoring in threats relevant to fisheries, not that fishing is worse than agriculture. Also...
@WhySharksMatter@snakeygirl42@kimfriedmans@hilbornr@FAOfish@FAO@EFCA_EU@EBCD_bxl As I'm sure u know, many years of no sightings are needed to declare extinction. There's a heap of literature showing that both target and non-target species are threatened with extinction by fishing, including some by yourself... https://t.co/NVNUroKls4
@WhySharksMatter@snakeygirl42@kimfriedmans@hilbornr@FAOfish@FAO@EFCA_EU@EBCD_bxl Yes, I'm not debating that. I'm simply pointing out that most (not all) categories used in this graphic are barely relevant to fishing, which gives the impression that fishing has very little impact - which is not true. Hence, more words are definitely needed.
@kimfriedmans@WhySharksMatter@hilbornr@FAOfish@FAO@EFCA_EU@EBCD_bxl Definitely more words needed. Of course fisheries are going to appear low impact when measured against threats more relevant to terrestrial farming. What if all were ranked against more aquatic relevant threats - bycatch, benthic habitat destruction, fishing pollution, etc.?
I like to think this only happens because you’ve either outsmarted the machine or tried to process advancements that the cabal don’t allow. #academictwitter
Great new paper out, on setting ambitious targets for the global recovery of #mangroves and #seagrass. Led by the amazing @ChristinABuelow, published in @CurrentBiology
Nations need to work together to recover vital #seagrass & #mangroves ecosystems 🌎🌱
