If you're looking for a good read over the Christmas break, I highly recommend it. You know me—I always write in a long, incomprehensible way, producing an unbearably boring disaster. And this book is no exception.

Whew, it was tough work! But do you know what gave me the most strength and yielded the best results?

Deadlines!

Every book is full of thank-yous of one kind or another, and of course, it takes a special set of circumstances and a lot of support to work full-time on a multi-hundred-page document, no doubt.

But if I'm grateful for anything, it's deadlines—they're what drove the breakthroughs and the results.

It’s thanks to deadlines that I discovered the recipe for fake granite, figured out how to create pure limestone, and even solved the mystery of the nubs.

In last couple of weeks, I was experimenting like a mad scientist. Because I am one! 😀

I had over twenty recipes lined up in the kitchen, the garage, the meadow in front of the house, and, at one point, chaos nearly took over the master bedroom. But thankfully, everything came together in the end:

The pure limestone hardened, became waterproof, and solidified into stone.

The fake granite survived a 20-minute boil, which actually turned into 50 minutes because the first shooting went sideways, so the poor sample had to endure the hot water torture twice.

I managed to dissolve a piece of granite into mush in a small pot on an electric burner, then condensed the resulting watery, poor-quality sodium silicate into something usable.

By the skin of my teeth and just before the deadline, I managed to close the loop: creating stone from stone. Not with store-bought materials, but with sodium silicate derived from dissolved granite.

Oh, and the nubs! Now, that’s a story. We toiled away with kitchen-towel water displacement experiments, convinced we were onto something groundbreaking, only to find out the solution was ridiculously simple and had nothing to do with our sloppy DIY attempts.

If you’ve seen the video of water pouring out of a crumpled tissue, you probably felt the same as I did: Eureka! So that’s why the nubs are needed—to drain this squeezed-out water!

Except… no. But I won’t spoil the fun—you’ll find all the details in the book, Chapter X: The Nubs.

Oh, this was a painful and long development process! Just in time! I have almost deleted this chapter from my new book as this thing nearly missed the deadline!

But luckily 🍀

Is there quartz in it? Yeees! A lot! In fact, as many as I want: I can mix aaanything into this material, including quartz grains.

(In fact I can create stone even from 🐴 💩 or whatever 🤣)

Is the binder SiO2, to fool archeologists using mass spectrometry and XRF? Yeeees! Indeed!

But is the binder quartz? Noooo!

(Btw: this👆🏻would be the right question to ask.)

Can we tell the quarry of this artificial stone ball using the common analysis tools? Sure, we can! This “carved” granite ball is from South Africa, so some 10.000 kms away.

It was carved there and shipped to Hungary - in a paper bag as a powder 🤣

Is it waterproof? Yes. Boiling proof? Yes. Acid proof? Yes. Alkali proof? Yes.

Mohs scale: 6-7

Ideal to fool unsuspecting people.

Ingredients:
• Waterglass
• “Secret ingredient” I’ll reveal later
• Billion years old, natural granite powder
• created on room temperature

I also attached the video of the 20 minutes boiling test.

(Explain this to me: why do we exactly expect the glass binder to fall apart in boiling water? Glass is glass.)

Ah! Almost forgot! Do you need a nub to create it in large size? It depends. If you happen to build a wall from it, then…

Absolutely! This mix releases so much water it’s unbelievable! You need to drain it or else you find your stone in a puddle.

Bubbles 🫧? Glad you asked. None. This is a “dry” technology, meaning: you press the water out from the mix, from a semi-dry material.

@BrightInsight6 you asked the first piece of the artificial granite. No luck, you’ll not get it. You know exactly why. (Just between you and me)
