In the future, we build things in space because space has infinity free power. Build a solar panel once and milk it forever.

Elon Musk is trying to sell you solar panels on Earth so he can develop them for space. Solar panels are awesome in space.

But they suck on Earth.

What's awesome on Earth is fissionable material. These special rocks just radiate free power. And I don't mean a little bit of free power. I mean a huge amount.

Like, you may think your modern automobile is pretty cool because it gets 30 miles to the gallon of gasoline. But a gallon of gasoline weighs 6 pounds.

If you could run your car on HALEU nuclear fuel instead, then those same six pounds would drive you 11.3 million miles.

You know, just in case you wanted to drive to the Apollo landing site and back.

23 times.

But that's only 17 years of continuous driving, so you should probably put that six pounds of fuel in your Tesla instead. That way you could drive to Mars. In 69 years.

At the end of your journey, you would have a bunch of highly dangerous radioactive waste, of course... six whole pounds of it.

You would have to dispose of it by taking extreme precautions, such as handling it with gloves. And burying it one meter deep. In a coffee can.

Now, the spicy rocks are really great because they're super spicy, but the traditional way of using them involves building a great big power plant that weighs about hundreds of thousands of tons, has to be built on a full square mile of wherever you want your power to be, and, for legal reasons, needs to be covered in the thick layer of federal bureaucrats to make sure things cost more, take longer, and generally suck.

So that's where this dude, @isaiah_p_taylor, comes in.

And he says "Wait a minute... if the spicy rocks are so goddamned spicy... why do we need a whole bunch of them in a huge containment vessel surrounded by acres of power plant?"

That's old thinking. Based on our preconceived notions of what a power plant is, which we got from burning coal and oil and other stuff that can't bring you to Mars with one coffee can.

Why not build a little tiny power plant? Like, a power plant the size of a train car? A power plant that you can load onto a train car, or a the back of a semi-rig, take it wherever you need it, and just set it down right there?

Each one holds a wee bit more than that 6 pound coffee can. Like, maybe 90 of those. That'll get your Tesla to Neptune, if you have 4000 years to spare.

Of course, that's not San Onofre. It won't power New York City by itself.

But that's what the word "modular" means. Bring as many as you need. Need one? Bring one. Need ten, bring ten.

If you actually do need to power New York City, bring 2000.

And 2000 isn't an unrealistic number. Because that's also what the word "modular" means.

Standardized.

Interchangeable.

Perfect the process with one, and then churn them out systematically. At scale.

No individualized custom site design. No years of construction. No environmental impact study committees. No thick layer of bureaucrats.

One design. One set of safety standards and protocols. One approval process. Then you crank them out forever.

The concept is already proven. How do you think the Navy gets from San Diego to the Strait of Hormuz? Immigrant galley slaves? Sailcloth?

And that's exactly where you get your workforce of modular plant operators... Navy vets who were running submarine reactors when they were twenty-two years old.

Except you can put these on a construction site because they're not a big box of weapons-grade plutonium. They're a barrel of low-grade fuel you have to handle with... gloves.

In the Robert Heinlein future, you run your factories in space with solar panels, because don't even get me started on how much power the sun gets from six pounds of hydrogen.

But on Earth, you run your air conditioner like this.

When her family pleaded for mercy because they feared she would die alone in jail, the Leftist judge mockingly told her: “Maybe you should make an effort to remain alive, because that is a tenet of your religion.”

3) In 2020, UNC Wilmington professor Mike Adams made a joke comparing the COVID lockdowns to slavery. The woke mob on campus destroyed his life, blocked his promotion to full professor, got him fired, stalked him everywhere he went, and harassed him with threatening phone calls and text messages until he committed suicide.

Investing is an economic activity, just as is wage earning.

A poor farmer who owns his own land and borrows funds from a bank to buy a ladder to pick apples, in hopes of using apple sales to pay back the losn, is investing in stock (the ladder) and speculating on profits.

If he hires a wealthy lawyer to prevent the bank from foreclosure, the lawyer is his employee.

The idea that the farmers will be driven by economic forces beyond human control to combine all farms into a worldwide monopoly and lower the price of lawyers to starvation wages is nonsense on stilts.

Every time they demand to stay in our country, there is always some claim that they do for us something we cannot do for ourselves.

To "be a scientist" is not a contribution. It is a credential. A scientist was enrolled in a PhD program, instead of someone else. He passed that program, and was given a fellowship, or a research grant, or a job, or a tenure track position. Instead of someone else.

When institutions squat across every upward ladder in your civilization, gatekeeping vigorously, it really IS a zero sum game.

And what have these student-visa, green-card-stapled-to-his-PhD scientists invented? Discovered? Revolutionized?

Not much.

Certainly not more than the native Americans did in the 20th century.

So, as far as I'm concerned, we can send them all back. Every last one. And wish them the best of luck in their own countries.

After all, if, as they claim, all playing fields are inherently level, and only merit matters, they should revolutionize their own economies in short order.

Most appreciation of "great art" is a performance.

People are very, very susceptible to "if you didn't appreciate it, it went over your head".

Whether that something is a $100K bottle of wine that tastes like Two-Buck Chuck, improvisational jazz that sounds like someone turned on an orchestra and walked away, or the... unique... style of David Foster Wallace doesn't make much of a difference.

These sorts of "refined" tastes are actually just unusual tastes. They are in the same category as really, really liking model trains, or birdwatching.

Except people who like birdwatching don't run elaborate psyops to convince everyone that birdwatchers are intellectually superior and more sophisticated. They just buy expensive binoculars and get on with doing what they like to do.

But some people with niche tastes in art seem to need to proselytize them to others.

And a lot of weak-willed people go along with it. They wouldn't want to look dumb, now would they?

Well, I don't go for that. I think that the greatest obstacle to learning is the fear of looking stupid.

And I'm particularly not impressed by things that have a reputation as "great literature", but are dull and opaque to the average reader.

Writing is my thing, see, and that means I have an easy time remembering that the purpose of writing is to communicate.

Not everything is going to appeal to 100% of everyone, but if your writing is opaque or boring to all but a few, you cannot, by definition, be a great writer, because you just failed the basics of craftsmanship.

Great woodworkers don't make sturdy furniture that's rough on the surface and full of splinters. They make chairs that are not only durable, but comfortable AND beautiful.

Because if they are great, they can do all these things at once.

If a book is boring, I set it down, instead of pretending that I had a hands-free orgasm because I am so super-duper-uber sophisticated that I can read the hidden messages in gibberish.

Maybe there are hidden messages. Maybe I'm smart enough to see them if I bothered to look.

But I don't.

Because I don't care about any hidden message from a man too unskilled to wrap his message in an interesting story, or too contemptuous of his audience to try.

So, no, I don't dislike Monet, I might even hang a print of something he did on my wall. But it's not a big deal to me, and not only can I probably not tell the difference between Monet and a good enough AI imitation, I don't even care enough to try.

Which is an approach I highly recommend to others, unless they need to tape a banana to a wall for tax purposes.

Brett Kavanaugh, a man in his 50s, had been valedictorian of his high school, at Yale College and a star student at Yale Law, had clerked for the Supreme Court, had a top career as an appellate lawyer and federal judge and a pristine reputation, and then a random woman from the town he grew up in claimed he had groped her at a party 35 years earlier when they were in high school.

Kavanaugh didn’t try to argue that the incident was consensual. He didn’t claim he remembered things differently than she did. He immediately stated that he had never even met the accuser. Denying ever meeting the accuser is a much stronger claim than merely denying assaulting her, and much easier to refute. After Kavanaugh made this denial, Christine Blasey-Ford no longer had to prove he had sexually assaulted her to scuttle his nomination, she only had to prove that the two of them had attended a party together at which such an assault might have occurred.

She was unable to do so. She did not know whose house the alleged assault occurred at. None of the people she claimed attended the party corroborated any aspect of her account. Leland Keyser, a friend of Blasey-Ford’s, who the accuser claimed was at the alleged party, said she recalled no such event and had never met Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh produced a detailed calendar he had kept during the summer Blasey-Ford alleged she was assaulted, which included his whereabouts of every weekend night and listing who he was with. Kavanaugh argued that he could alibi himself and provide witnesses for any night Blasey-Ford claimed she might have been at a party with him. Blasey-Ford responded that she did not know the date of her assault and was not entirely certain it even occurred that year. Instead of being seen as persuasive, Kavanaugh’s calendar was mocked in both mainstream and social media because the reason he kept it was for a drinking contest he was having with his friends.

Nearly a decade later, there is still not a single shred of proof or a single witness who will corroborate the claim that Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey-Ford were ever in the same room before she testified at his confirmation hearing. Nonetheless, people like Nick Kristof still claim Kavanaugh was “credibly accused” of sexually assaulting this woman.
