Wrote for La Presse for 25 years—without compensation. Was proud of it.

My column was discontinued this Spring after I posted a message on Facebook expressing concern that Ottawa’s media tax-credit program could compromise editorial independence by encouraging pro-Liberal and anti-American narratives.

This week, I was stunned by a column from Francis Vailles in which he essentially wrote that he never imagined he could hate Americans—all Americans—so much. Vailles is a respected and talented columnist whom I have read regularly for years.

Although La Presse stopped publishing my work, I continue to pay for a monthly subscription because I believe Canadians should support independent journalism whenever they can. But Vailles’ comments shocked me. Even more troubling, his column became one of La Presse’s most-read articles of the week.

He described feeling repulsed when seeing an American flag in a movie and abandoning online chess games upon discovering that his opponent was American. These are deeply personal expressions of hostility toward an entire nationality.

Democracies need free, independent and balanced media. This was not balanced journalism. It normalized hostility toward another country and risked encouraging readers to feel the same way.

Our democracy is increasingly unhealthy. Canadians have been bombarded with biased messaging for years now, and the problem appears to be getting worse. La Presse is certainly not alone.

I do not know how we get out of this mess. But I hope Canadians will eventually receive more balanced information—reporting that helps them understand what is actually happening in the world, rather than commentary driven by hostility toward Americans, or anyone else for that matter. A columnist’s responsibility is to inform and challenge the public.

This crossed the line into pure advocacy.

Avant même le remboursement de la dette. Il s’agit ici d’un simple partage des profits sur un pont construit à 100% avec l’argent de nos impôts.

C’est le contraire de ce que vous avez dit.

Après une telle contradiction, comment les Canadiens peuvent-ils vous faire confiance sur tout ce qui concerne vos relations avec les États-Unis ?

The Canadian Dairy Commission fully controlled by Dairy Farmers, a Crown corporation—not Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada—is demanding a correction based on a document in which the section detailing government funding and support was completely redacted. The redactions suggest that records related to government support do exist, but they have not been disclosed.

I have no intention of issuing a correction until I receive an unredacted version of the relevant information. Transparency should come before demands for retractions.

Danielle Smith today in Quebec calls Steven Guilbeault the most destructive politician to national unity that we’ve ever seen.

She says of she was proposing an alternative referendum question that Steven Guilbeault should never be allowed to run for political office again she would get 100 percent support.

She goes on to make a very good point, imagine she went to Quebec and told the people there that she was going to make sure they would never produce hydro electric power or aluminum ever again how would they feel?

Sure, Liberals say, Canada is the only G7 country in recession.

Sure, two back-to-back quarters of shrinking GDP is the textbook definition of a recession.

But, they say, it is just a “technical recession”. A fluke. Everything else is great.

So let’s look beyond the back-to-back quarterly decline: Canada’s unemployment is now the 2nd highest in the G7—a third higher than in the U.S.—as Canada lost 112,300 jobs in just three months, leaving 45,800 more Canadians jobless since Carney became Prime Minister.

The economy contracted in three of Carney's four quarters in office, something unmatched in the G7, as business investment fell another 0.7% for a fifth straight quarterly decline, and more than $20 billion in net investment fled Canada.

Meanwhile, insolvencies hit their highest levels since 2009, up nearly 19%, with 1.5 million Canadians missing debt payments in just three months and mortgage delinquencies rising 32%.

Canadian households carry by far the highest debt in the G7, while food bank use continues to surge. 1 in 10 GTA residents are now relying on them and visits are hitting a record 4.1 million last year—up 340% since 2019. Nationwide, food bank demand is up 100% in 7 years.

Almost all these measures are worse than when Carney took office and worse than any other G7 country—so blaming world events or tariffs won’t cut it.

Stop the excuses. Own it: This is a full-blown Carney Recession.

Provinces have until tomorrow, May 31, to allow alcohol sales across provincial borders. Don't hold your breath.

Most liquor boards are still operating with a protectionist mindset, limiting interprovincial trade while many continue to ban the sale of American liquor altogether.

For a country that talks endlessly about free trade, Canada's alcohol market remains one of the most restricted in the developed world.

So let me get this straight...

Canada is in a recession—the only G7 country currently in one. Unemployment is up. Inflation is rising. Food insecurity is at a record high.

Yet the highest proportion of Canadians since 2017 now say the country is on the right track.

That's either a remarkable display of optimism—or a sign that many Canadians aren't getting the full economic story from the news they consume.

Steven Guilbeault is leaving federal politics, and not a moment too soon.

He may go down as one of the ministers who most aggressively weaponized science, funding questionable research groups like the Canadian Climate Institute and other pet projects to reinforce a single “climate crisis” narrative.

Anyone claiming Guilbeault truly believed in science is fooling themselves. He treated science like a buffet — picking only what supported his agenda. That’s not science.

He even misquoted me in the House of Commons, attributing claims to me that I have never said or published. That alone tells you everything you need to know about how evidence and dissent were handled under his watch.

Good riddance.
