What began in September 1991 on the heights of Asebot Mountain; where sixteen monks and disciples were bound and thrown off the Jerti cliff, fell on the blind eye of the international community, meting out silence where there should have been global condemnation.

Thirty-five years later, that unchecked impunity has grown into full-scale warfare on sacred spaces, executed with precision drone strikes. What was once carried out on foot has now become digitized: precision strikes ordered against monastic communities with the casual ease of a routine propaganda broadcast, while the global community continues to look the other way.

This trajectory is now a defining feature of the broader war. ancient monasteries and civilian centers are increasingly treated as secondary collateral, or direct targets, in a campaign of sustained destruction. Moving from the cliffside executions of 1991 to the push-button drone strikes of today's war on Amhara, the fundamental tragedy remains unchanged: centuries-old spiritual sanctuaries reduced to active battlefields, with peaceful ascetics and non-combatants bearing the brunt of a devastating war.
