This thread exposes a hard truth: Somalia’s chronic fragility has been monetized. Billions in aid keep flowing, yet corruption, diversion, and non-accountability remain systemic. When aid increases but failure persists, the system—not the people—is being sustained.

[Mohamoud Hashi @MohamudHAbdi]

How has Somalia used its fragility through corrupt aid industry, frauding half a billion of international aid annually?

Despite receiving over $14.4bn in aid (2011–2023) and requesting $1.6bn in 2024 alone, donor dependency and humanitarian needs in Somalia remain permanent. While continuously ranking the global list of corrupt countries, Somalia and its MDAs have overseen $14.4 billion in humanitarian and development aid between 2011 to 2023. Remarkably, the extent of fraud is deeply entrenched, with documented aid diversion rates of 5–50% annually, placing annual external assistance losses between $55 million and $550 million.

Several UN audits, Reuters investigations, and Somalia's own Auditor General reports show rampant theft across all 55 IDP sites examined, 43% of sampled UN funds allocated to a tested sample of 17 implementation partners were unaccounted for. Somalia's Auditor General's audit report to the World Bank Baxnaano Project (2024) found no beneficiary data disclosed despite the alleged disbursement of $153.81 million in social assistance to needy population.

In 2024 alone, the same report, issued by Somalia's Auditor General, identified $200 million in financial irregularities directly linked to government-managed funds and externally assisted projects.
Furthermore, 21 gov't institutions, including Ministries, Departments & Agencies, refused to disclose external assistance they received, while $5.05 million in aid was not reported, $9.40 million in extra-budgetary receipts omitted, and $9.49 million in extra-budgetary payments concealed. Earlier audits show $95.8 million unaudited between 2019 to 2021, with multiple years having no published audit findings. Additionally, more recent audit reports confirm $96+ million in unaccounted government funds, and widespread MDA non-compliance.

This reality paints the dark but factual picture of how the international community has consistently backed and propped up a system of absolute failure, while turning a blind eye to the Republic of Somaliland. Whether donors are implicated in this or not, the fact that aid flows keep rising while fragility is not being solved, indicates that Somalia has monitized its chronic fragility, turning it into a high-return business for few individuals mainly concentrated in its capital of Mogadishu at the expense of suffering Somalian people.

The only question that one may ask: will Somalia's donors continue on pouring more money into it or just stop wasting their resources?

Acknowledged at Home, Denied at the UN: #Somalia’s #Somaliland Genocide Contradiction

Somalia’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has acknowledged and publicly apologized for the genocide committed against the people of Somaliland by the Siad Barre regime, a position that sharply contrasts with statements made by Somalia’s envoy at the United Nations.

During yesterday’s UN Security Council meeting, Somalia’s ambassador to the UN, Abukar Balle, denied that genocide, triggering criticism from survivors, civil society groups, and observers who say the atrocities are extensively documented through eyewitness testimony, mass graves, and international human rights reports.

The contradiction between the Somali president’s acknowledgment and the UN envoy’s denial has reignited debate over historical accountability, truth, and justice for crimes committed in the late 1980s, when Somaliland cities including Hargeisa and Burao were subjected to large-scale destruction, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Somaliland restored its sovereignty in 1991 and has since maintained its own governing institutions, security forces, and democratic processes.

We condemn the violent incident that occurred during the departure of the former President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi. Violence and gunfire have no place in a peaceful and stable society. Security and the rule of law must be upheld.
