Pep Guardiola used to tell Rodri: “There is no system that can compensate for losing the ball repeatedly. It was more about staying calm and controlling the ball than it was about the system.”
That’s what Rodri told the interviewer when he was asked what changed at half-time.
Many of you probably noticed the moment in the picture on the right. Rodri repeated this action several times with his teammates in the first half, especially after we scored the equalizer.
Every few minutes, he would tell them: “Slow the game down, slow the game down.”
He could see that the team was losing control, the players were making poor decisions, and the game was becoming too chaotic. His priority was simply to get through the half, calm everyone down, and regain control in the dressing room.
And that’s exactly what happened.
This is the mentality and leadership we’ve been missing at Barcelona.
Rodri could see the team was losing control, so every few minutes he was telling his teammates: “Slow the game down.”
Sometimes you don’t need another tactical instruction. You need a leader on the pitch who can read the situation and calm everyone down.
If we had someone like Rodri in the Inter game, or some of our previous defeats, things could have been different. We’ve often lacked that true leader who tells his teammates when to slow down instead of forcing the game.
That’s what makes Rodri special. A true leader. 👏🏻

Many Barça fans criticized Rodri for his statements yesterday, with some even comparing him to Gündogan.
But Rodri knows exactly what he is talking about.
When he says the Champions League is a competition of moments, where red cards, penalties, unnecessary goals conceded and a failure to control key situations can decide a tie, it is impossible not to think about Barcelona’s recent exits.
Against Inter, Barça scored, created chances and competed, but were punished whenever we lost control of the game. Last season against Atlético Madrid, we saw the same thing: small details completely changed the course of the tie.
Even in the Copa del Rey, Barça lost the 1st leg 4-0, responded with a 3-0 win in the 2nd leg, but still went out after conceding goals that could have been avoided.
That is exactly what Rodri means when he talks about teams conceding more goals than they should.
Barça have repeatedly shown that they have the quality to compete with anyone. The problem has been turning that superiority into control and security when the biggest moments arrive.
Rodri understands that winning the biggest trophies is not only about playing better football. You need to know when to accelerate, when to slow the game down, when to take risks and, most importantly, when to protect a result.
The talent is already there. The next step is learning how to control the moments that decide Champions League nights.
And perhaps that is exactly why Rodri was brought in.
The Champions League is the final step Barça are still missing. 💙❤️
Barcelona’s defensive problems are primarily down to the board. The back line already had clear issues and lapses last season, but what we are seeing now, with all the criticism being directed at Gerard Martín as if he is the disaster and the reason behind everything, is simply ridiculous.
Martín is not a terrible defender. He is a good player who has produced plenty of excellent moments. But you cannot put all that pressure on him, make him a starter in a position that is not his natural position, and then expect him to deliver perfect performances that take the pressure off Cubarsí.
He is doing what he can and, in many situations, even more than expected given his ability and the circumstances he has been put in.
The board should have gone into the summer transfer window and signed an experienced left sided centre back who could also provide leadership. That position is crucial to Flick’s system, especially when building from the back. You need a player who can make quick decisions and defend proactively.
Failing to complete that signing left the team without a real solution. Martín is now the only option, while Flick is trying Christensen in that position. But even Christensen cannot be relied on for too many minutes because the club are understandably worried about a recurrence of his injury.
What really bothers me about this whole situation is Cubarsí. He is producing incredible performances, but he genuinely deserves an experienced defender beside him who can take some of the pressure off his shoulders and lead the defense alongside him.
Barcelona have been clearly relying this season on creating numerical overloads on one side of the pitch while isolating the winger on the opposite side.
This idea is known as Overload to Isolate. It may be a classic tactical concept, but Barcelona have been executing it brilliantly.
Flick has been using this approach to create the perfect situation for Gordon: isolating him one on one with plenty of space, because that is where his qualities can truly make the difference.
Barcelona overload one side with the winger, fullback, midfielders and striker, which naturally attracts the opposition towards that area. At the same time, this opens spaces on the opposite side, where Gordon can be isolated and attack his defender directly.
The same principle also works through Lamine Yamal’s side. His movements and penetrations attract defenders and open passing lanes, allowing Barcelona to find the opposite flank through quick switches and through balls.
Barcelona are arguably the best team in the world when it comes to breaking down defensive blocks and finding attacking solutions.
A huge variety of tactical ideas from the coach combined with exceptional technical quality from the players means Barcelona can find a way through almost any normal defensive setup.
I Has anyone backed Hansi Flick as much as RobyPoto? No, I don’t think so.
This is my letter for him :
I was 17 when Hansi Flick joined Barcelona, and with the analysis I did then, I thought the change of culture would be very dangerous for the club and would do a lot more damage than benefit to Barcelona. I rated that managerial appointment as a 7/10.
What I didn’t understand was that due to our incredible core and La Masia education, it was very hard for Flick to change the culture. I didn’t even realize that his appointment would be a mix, and rather than changing our strengths and trying to impose a new philosophy, he stuck to only covering the weaknesses and mixing our strengths (temperament, positional interpretations and reading the game) with his strengths of mobility, directness, and knowing how and when to accelerate the game. His most obvious trait was the implementation of deep runs. You can see it from anyone on the pitch that they know how and when to make that deep run, especially with the best final passer in the world, Lamine, the metronome winger, and that incredible midfield plus Cubarsí.
It was very hard for a group of players that played together since they were 12 years old, or some that became best friends, to not form socio-affective relations when progressing the ball through the center, or to not understand each other in that micro-society. It was always a matter of being fit and intense enough, which Flick implemented.
Also, a key point was Flick’s understanding of the group’s mentality. Of course, you need to play fast, attacking-minded football that generates enough xG to keep everyone in the team satisfied. It’s very hard to play pragmatic football when you have that attack, which is very young and very enthusiastic. You cannot convince them to adopt rigid, slow, positional football by tricking them into thinking it’s for the benefit of the team.
One critique I had for Flick was always regarding rotations. Not in the first season, however in the second one, older followers remember my tweet when I said we lost the Champions League in March when Flick didn’t trust the squad enough to rest the key players and have enough energy and intensity to capitalize on that easy run. Maybe Flick’s explanation was that he needed to form relations and you cannot do it easily, especially without a clear structure that was very mobile last season and very dependent on multiple factors, rather than relations built in a standard structure like PSG’s.
This is the third, and I fear the last, season of Flick. Now he has all the pieces to get what we always wanted and what he always wanted, that awaiting dream that was very close to happening in 24/25 if it wasn’t for that night in Milan (which he also recalls as his worst night in his time at Barcelona). There are no excuses to not rotate, use his whole team, and use all the keys he has to at least achieve a semifinal of the Champions League and a domestic treble once again. Yes, we are stuck with that trophy, yes a semifinal will be enough for me to be happy. That tournament has too many factors to control, and I will understand him once again. However, below a semifinal, I won’t.
Therefore, Mister Flick, with all my heart, use your whole squad, rotate as much as needed but as little as to not damage the relations, and let’s go get that Sexta. Your admirer, RobyPoto.
Raphinha as a striker might actually be his best position for this team.
First of all, I think we can all agree that playing him on the right or as a CAM was never ideal. Both roles restricted his positioning, and that's the complete opposite of what Raphinha needs. He's a player who thrives when he's given as much positional freedom as possible.
The left-wing role gave him exactly that freedom and, individually, it brought out the best version of Raphinha. But structurally, it did create some problems. Without a natural winger constantly holding the width, the left-back often had to carry the entire flank on his own. It also made it easier for teams to overload and heavily mark Lamine on the other side because they didn't have to commit as many players to defending our left.
Now look at the striker role.
This season, we're not using a traditional fixed striker. The role is incredibly mobile and free-roaming. Raphinha can drop deep, run in behind, move wide, occupy the half-spaces and basically position himself wherever the situation demands.
That's absolutely perfect for his profile.
And the best part is that it doesn't come at the expense of the system. I genuinely believe this is the type of striker role Flick was already preparing for with a potential signing. Alvarez, Joao Pedro, Kroupi Jr... all the names we kept hearing were mobile, versatile strikers rather than traditional focal points.
So this isn't Flick randomly changing the system just to get the best out of Raphinha. This is simply the type of striker profile and role he wanted for the team anyway.
Raphinha just happens to fit it perfectly.
This is be the best way to get the absolute best out of him without sacrificing anything structurally.
The only reason Barcelona are constantly overlooked and barely taken seriously is their failure in the Champions League.
But people don't realise football doesn't always work like that.
Manchester City were ridiculously dominant under Guardiola and only won one Champions League. That Barcelona team from 2008–12 was arguably the greatest team we've ever seen, yet they only won two Champions Leagues.
I know two is impressive, but we're talking about a team that is constantly labelled the greatest ever. If you're looking at it purely through Champions League success, you'd be massively underrating what they actually achieved.
Barcelona have simply been unlucky in the Champions League for a long time. And the previous management made things even worse, especially after Messi left.
Now they're rebuilding a new era of the club.
The Champions League success will come eventually if they keep building, developing and competing. You have to dominate your league and your country before you can consistently dominate Europe.
And this is exactly why some Barcelona players are massively underrated.
Players like Fermín López, Eric García, Pau Cubarsí and Joan García don't get nearly enough respect outside Barcelona because Barcelona fans are the ones watching them week in, week out and understanding their actual value.
A lot of players only get properly rated once they start performing on the biggest Champions League nights.
Winning the Champions League would immediately make people admire this Barcelona team much more.
Look at Arsenal.
They've been a formidable team for around five years, but people only really started taking them seriously after they won the Premier League.
That's just how football works.
And I don't necessarily think PSG's players are better than Barcelona's.
PSG have simply learned how to manage their key players, keep them fit and have them fresh for the biggest Champions League games.
They don't have the same level of domestic competition.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have to deal with Real Madrid constantly lurking.
So yes, Champions League success matters.
But using it as the only measurement of how good Barcelona are right now is completely unfair.
This Barcelona team is building something. Give them time.
BARCELONA'S IN POSSESSION SHAPE AGAINST RAYO VALLECANO.
Hansi FLICK made three changes from Barca's last game for the match against Rayo Vallecano.
Olmo was brought in for Fermin, Christensen replaced Gerard Martin and Eric Garcia made way for Kounde.
BARCA'S in possession shape was quite similar to the last game, except for a few changes brought by the new additions in the lineup.
• ) GORDON and ESPART continued on the left wing. That combination is working brilliantly for Barca because of the style of play of both players. They seem to understand each other and when one inverts, the other holds width.
The best part of all this is that both are equally good in moving into the left half space and using their exquisite passing range. Move Pedri into that area and you get plethora of solutions.
• ) In the first two games, we saw Fermin Lopez a lot in the right half space supporting Lamine Yamal. Last night OLMO started in Fermin's place and his role was kind of similar. Though, Olmo does not provide Barca the runs and energy that Fermin brings. Still, he was tilting a bit more towards the right side to combine with Yamal.
• ) Barca continued with their back 3 against Rayovin possession. This time it was Christensen on the left and Kounde on the right. KOUNDE contributed a bit more to the attack as compared to Eric and that was for one specific reason.
• ) Olmo does not provide that support to Lamine that Fermin provides. So with, Fermin playing the full back can stay in the back line for longer periods but with Olmo in the line up, the right back needs to support Lamine a bit more.
That is why we saw Kounde a bit more involved in the attacking phase than Eric Garcia.
• ) PEDRI was again all over the pitch and the engine behind Barca's success. He was responsible for ball progression in all parts of the field and linked the defence to the forward line.
🚨 How Barcelona under Hansi Flick dominates opponents when it comes to possession and controlling the ball 🤔
Across 3 games, Barcelona have had as much as 70% possession, averaged nearly 500+ accurate passes, scored 12 goals, and created more than 19 chances in just 3 games.
These numbers show just how good Barcelona are at completely dominating games. And this possession isn’t simply down to individual quality. It reflects a much higher level of quality in progressing the ball from the back, clear ideas for playing out under pressure, and forcing opponents to drop all 11 players back and spend around 70% of the game around their own penalty area and in their own half.
Focus on these two sequences and let’s break down how Barcelona progress the ball until they force the opponent to retreat and drop deep. ✔️
🔴 First sequence:
Rayo Vallecano are using a high press against Barcelona during the build up from the back.
If you pay attention, you’ll see Christensen positioned toward the left, Cubarsí toward the right, while Pedri drops between them as a third center back and takes on the role of a regista.
Cubarsí was the defender in La Liga last season with the most touches and one of the highest passing accuracy rates, while there’s no need to explain Pedri’s ability to play out and pass under pressure.
Gordon drops deep to receive a brilliant pass from Cubarsí that breaks Rayo Vallecano’s pressing line. That creates the transition and forces Rayo to retreat to close down the spaces.
🔴 Second sequence:
Once Rayo Vallecano drop all 11 players behind the ball, Barcelona are effectively playing with 10 players in Rayo’s half, perfectly positioned across the wings, through the center, between the lines, and in the half spaces.
With this perfect positioning, passing triangles are constantly formed across the pitch, giving every player two or even three passing options. That is the essence of positional play.
With these ideas, quick passing, and the individual quality of Yamal, Raphinha, and Gordon, Barcelona turn this possession into chances and goals.

Gabriel Jesus joining Barça confirms one thing for me: Flick never really wanted the classic tall, physical, pure goalscoring striker profile.
He wants a forward who can do much more outside the box, combine with the wingers and interchange positions across the attack. That profile is only available among a few elite players like Kane and Julián Álvarez, and neither of their clubs would realistically sell to Barça.
So Barça have gone for a player with a profile somewhat similar to Julián. Jesus would be willing to join, Arsenal would not stand in his way, and if he stays fit, I genuinely think he can be very useful in Flick’s system as a backup striker.
At €10M, you are barely buying an unknown La Liga striker in today’s market. For a player with Gabriel Jesus’ qualities, it is a great market opportunity.
The only huge concern is his injuries. That is honestly what scares me about this signing. Without that issue, I would see it as an excellent opportunity that also would not affect Barça’s chances of going back for Julián in January if the opportunity becomes available.
My opinion on the signing: great profile, great price, potentially very useful… but the injury record is the biggest risk.
