ECOWAS COMMISSION RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE/ HEAD OF MISSION IN GUINEA-BISSAU LAUDS ESSMGB PERSONNEL FOR PROFESSIONALISM

The Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission (RRPC) and Head of Mission (HOM) to Guinea-Bissau, Her Excellency Ambassador Dr Ngozi Ukaeje, has described personnel of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), as “ Diplomatic Military professionals.”

Ambassador Ukaeje gave the commendation on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, when the Force Commander (FC) ESSMGB, Brigadier General Danjuma Ribah Dantani, led senior officers, including the newly inducted Deputy Force Commander, Contingent Commanders and staff officers of the Force Headquarters (FHQ), on a visit to the Office of RRPC/HOM at the ECOWAS Office in Bissau.

The RRPC/HOM, who expressed delight at receiving the new officers into the ECOWAS Mission, said she was particularly impressed by the professionalism of the contingents and their ability to immediately hit the ground running upon assumption of duty. She advised the Contingent Commanders to ensure they tailor their in-house trainings towards supporting the National Defence Forces of Guinea-Bissau in the forthcoming referendum and subsequent general elections in the country. Dr Ukaeje further encouraged the officers to remain focused and brace up for the tasks ahead in order to achieve the objectives of the Mission.

Earlier, the FC stated that the visit was aimed at formally introducing the newly inducted senior officers to the RRPC/HOM in line with the traditions of the FHQ. He added that the visit would also provide an opportunity for the RRPC/HOM to meet the officers and engage them directly whenever the need arises.

Brigadier General Danjuma further briefed her on administrative and operational matters concerning the contingents and expressed appreciation for her exemplary leadership and her continued support in leading the affairs of the mission.

The newly introduced senior officers included the Deputy Force Commander, Colonel Nicholas Sambou from Senegal, Contingent Commanders of Nigeria, Ghana, and their deputies, as well as staff officers of the FHQ

COAS STRENGTHENS COMBAT MEDICAL SUPPORT, COMMISSIONS CRITICAL CARE CENTRE

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army in provision of an efficient and responsive healthcare system as critical to sustaining military operations and preserving troops’ combat effectiveness.

Lieutenant General Shaibu stated this in Kaduna while commissioning the newly completed Waidi Shaibu Critical Care Centre at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital (44 NARH). He also commissioned a modern helipad designed to facilitate the swift medical evacuation of injured personnel from operational theatres to the hospital.

The COAS noted that timely access to quality medical care directly impacts troop morale, recovery rates and the overall operational readiness of the Nigerian Army. He explained that the Critical Care Centre is equipped to manage trauma, intensive care and other complex medical cases, thereby reducing the need to refer critically injured or ill personnel outside military medical facilities.

“The strength of any fighting force is not measured by weapons alone, but also by the quality of care given to those who bear the burden of national security,” the COAS stated. He added that the Nigerian Army remains committed to upgrading medical infrastructure across its formations and units to meet contemporary operational and healthcare demands.

The helipad was constructed under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, during his tenure as Chief of Army Staff. Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the CDS for his foresight, describing the facility as a critical enabler that would significantly reduce casualty evacuation time from operational theatres and enhance the chances of survival and recovery.

The COAS charged medical personnel at 44 NARH to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ensure the optimal utilisation and maintenance of the newly commissioned facilities.

SHOP BREAKING: BORNO POLICE ARREST TWO SUSPECTS OVER BURGLARY, RECOVER CASH AND OTHER EXHIBITS IN MAIDUGURI

The Borno State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating crime and protecting lives and property, recording a recent breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects in connection with the burglary of a provision shop in Maiduguri, during which cash and other items were reportedly stolen.

BRIFE OF INCIDENT
On 23 August 2026, at about 1400hrs, one Mohammed Bello Umar reported to the Command that his shop located at Gwange Zuwa Dawuri Area Maiduguri, was burgled in the early hours of 20th August 2026.

According to the complainant, an unspecified amount of cash reported to be about N2,000,000, alongside provisions and other items kept in the shop, were taken away by the perpetrators.

Following the report, operatives of the Command State Intelligence Department (SID) commenced investigation and acted on credible intelligence, leading to the arrest of two suspects, (1) Hussain Mohammed, 17yrs, (3) Rabiu Yusuf, 17yrs, both of Gwange Zuwadawuri area, Maiduguri.

During investigation, the suspects reportedly confessed to the crime and further mentioned two accompanists (1) Kalifa (2) Pato, whom they alleged to have been involved in the offense. The Command has recovered the sum of N430,000 while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the two suspects currently at large.

The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, has directed that the investigation be conducted thoroughly and professionally, with a view to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.
