Iran brings Balayya into its meme war with US - from Tollywood, not Bollywood

As US President Donald Trump talks tough on Iran, the Iranian Embassy in Zimbabwe has reached into Indian cinema for a tongue-in-cheek response, using a high-voltage Balakrishna action scene to suggest that Tehran is not exactly sitting defenceless.

And there’s a Telugu twist: the footage is from Bhagavanth Kesari, the 2023 Telugu film directed by @AnilRavipudi, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna. The film was later released in a Hindi-dubbed version.

So, technically, Iran’s meme is borrowing from Telugu cinema, not Bollywood. A mass-movie moment has now found a very different geopolitical stage
