..... as are Hartlepool, Darlington and Stockton (north) in County Durham but not Middlesbrough, Redcar and Stockton (south) despite all being in the same Mayoralty.
You’ve probably been told:
“Gateshead, Jarrow, South Shields and Sunderland used to be in County Durham, but aren't anymore.”
It sounds true.
But it isn’t.
County Durham hasn’t changed - only administration has.
So why are we pretending otherwise?
The term 'ceremonial county' didn’t come from history.
It came from the 1990s.
A modern label for lieutenancy areas - not a real type of county.
The law doesn’t even use the term.
Yet it’s everywhere.
Ever wondered why?
@britishcounties Excellent news! There's the name of a few more forthcoming unitary authorities we need to work on yet, though! Those involving the current and inappropriately named, "Lancashire County Council", of particular interest to the people of Yorkshire's Bowland and West Craven!
Options for unitary councils in the Oxfordshire County Council area include an 'Oxfordshire Council' based on the current county council area:

Any such council should be named 'Oxfordshire and North Berkshire Council'

The unique heritage of Rutland deserves far better than sheer dismissal in the naming of any new unitary authority administering England's smallest county!
Is history going to repeat itself and see the historic county of Rutland put under a local authority just called "Leicestershire"?
The consultation on unitary local government in the area suggests so: https://t.co/HJNZHNTwgC

@Matt56404055206@JHenryCDF Absolutely! But like Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, the federal parts of England should be represented by traditional boundaries, not boundaries imposed by Whitehall bureaucrats. That means by the Historic Counties, not by Lieutenancies or Local Government Areas.

Real counties. Real history. Told Properly. https://t.co/WfVNjjcgya
Came across this The Times comment via the Association of British Counties. We at YDM entirely agree with Rob Nash, the author! Our traditional counties are the only way to end confusion over general purpose geography.
