Having a farewell lunch with my postdoc advisor, one of the most distinguished professors in comm, Dr. Joseph Cappella. ☺️ Very grateful for all the advice and support. This one-year postdoc experience will be memorable for the rest of my career! Next stop, TT AP at KU 🔜
Thrilled to share I’ll be joining UMD iSchool @INFOCollegeUMD@UofMaryland as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Fall 2025 #GoTerps🐢. I'm grateful I get to spend one more year as a postdoc @UW_iSchool@UWCIP till next summer 🫶. More on my research: https://t.co/BEXXngGBqO
🚨CAN GENERATIVE AI IMPROVE SOCIAL SCIENCE?🚨 I spent the last year trying to answer this question with the help of some very thoughtful reviewers (and editors) for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (ungated) : https://t.co/M148OatUNl

📢 New publication with Dr. Joseph Cappella in @AsianJComm. It is my great honor to co-author with one of the giants in the field of communication. In this paper, we integrated information processing theories with belief change theories. We then proposed a new theoretical model.
📌 The proposed model predicts that argument strength and format features interact to influence perceived effectiveness of messages. Specifically, format features moderate the effects of argument strength through motivation and ability.
@Summer912_ Hi Rui, I’m happy to share the copy of the paper or any additional materials with you! Please drop me a email ([email protected]) and I’ll share it with you. Thanks!
Shameless self promotion. I welcome any collaboration on health misinformation! I’m on the job market this year. If you need a colleague who has expertise in using computational methods to study theoretically interesting questions in health and strategic communication, I’m here!
Using a semantic network approach, new research shows that the more similar news organizations are in ideology and news truthfulness, the more similar their language is when covering mask policy @YueEdu @rmbond15

@ErinxxMarie I’m so sorry to hear your loss, Erin! My deepest condolences to you and your family. Stay strong and take care of yourself. May your mom rest in peace. Your mom was a tough woman. I feel touched by the words in the obituary. Will see you in Philly soon.
Longitudinal analysis indicates the White House's emphasis on efficacy and downplaying of COVID threats during the early stage of the pandemic were associated with differing self-quarantine behaviors and threat perceptions among Democrats and Republicans https://t.co/QWB7f3BkpO
📣 New pub with Prof. Joyce Wang and @qinli0 in Human Communication Research @HCR_Journal. We examined the White House press conferences during the early stage of the pandemic and their association with the divergent perceptions and behaviors of partisans in the U.S. 🧵 1/
⚒️ This study uses supervised machine learning and time series analysis, demonstrating how to use computational methods to conduct theory-driven research and answer theoretically interesting questions. 🧵 4/
💎 This study contributes to presidential communication research by examining specific message features and linking them to longitudinal public perceptions and behaviors. This study also contributes to health communication by extending the EPPM to a dynamic model. 🧵 3/
🔑 The results show that the White House focused on efficacy but included minimal threat information. However, threat information can significantly reduce the partisan gap in perceived threat and self-quarantine behavior. 🧵 2/
My deepest condolences to Professor Bear’s family. He was a true role model. I took his class during the pandemic. He helped us download all the articles with our comments when I requested it. As an instructor myself later, I can hardly imagine myself doing the same thing. R.I.P
Our dear colleague, Bear Braumoeller, passed away this morning in Oslo after a sudden, brief illness. Words cannot express our feelings of profound sadness. As we know more, we will post plans for events in his memory.
