२७ जुलै १९७८,
रोजी महाराष्ट्रात नामांतराच्या संघर्षाने एक ऐतिहासिक वळण घेतले. डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या नावाने मराठवाडा विद्यापीठाचे नामकरण करण्याचा निर्णय जाहीर होताच, दलित समाजावर नियोजनबद्ध हिंसाचार सुरू झाला. अनेक गावांमध्ये दलितांच्या वस्त्या जाळल्या गेल्या, घरे उद्ध्वस्त करण्यात आली, महिलांवर अत्याचार झाले, हजारो लोक विस्थापित झाले आणि अनेकांना आपले प्राण गमवावे लागले. हा विरोध एका विद्यापीठाच्या नावाला नव्हता; तो बाबासाहेबांच्या विचारांना, समतेच्या तत्त्वाला आणि दलित समाजाच्या स्वाभिमानालाच होता.

आंबेडकरी विचारांचा अनुयायी आणि दलित समाजातून आलेला नागरिक म्हणून नामांतर आंदोलन माझ्यासाठी केवळ इतिहास नाही, तर आपल्या समाजाच्या जखमांची आणि संघर्षाची जिवंत स्मृती आहे. बाबासाहेबांनी आम्हाला शिक्षण, स्वाभिमान आणि संविधानाचा मार्ग दिला; पण त्या मार्गावर चालताना आमच्या समाजाने रक्त, अश्रू आणि अमानुष छळ सहन केला. अशा संघर्षाची जाणीव करून देणाऱ्या नामदेव ढसाळांच्या ओळी आजही मनाला भिडतात— "रक्तात पेटलेल्या अगणित सूर्यांनो..." त्या केवळ काव्य नाहीत, तर अन्यायाविरुद्ध उभे राहण्याची जिद्द आणि स्वाभिमानाची घोषणा आहेत.

अखेर १४ जानेवारी १९९४ रोजी "डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर मराठवाडा विद्यापीठ" हे नाव अधिकृतपणे स्वीकारण्यात आले. हा विजय केवळ एका विद्यापीठाच्या नामांतराचा नव्हता; तो समता, न्याय आणि मानवी प्रतिष्ठेच्या लढ्याचा विजय होता. आज नामांतर आंदोलनातील सर्व ज्ञात-अज्ञात हुतात्म्यांना आणि संघर्ष करणाऱ्या प्रत्येक कार्यकर्त्याला विनम्र अभिवादन. त्यांचा लढा आपल्याला आठवण करून देतो की स्वाभिमानाचा इतिहास हा संघर्षातूनच लिहिला जातो.

Maharashtra witnessed the beginning of one of the longest and most significant struggles for social justice—the Namantar Andolan. The demand to rename Marathwada University after Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was never merely about changing a name; it was about recognizing the contribution of the architect of India's Constitution and affirming the dignity and equality of millions who had long been denied both. The violent resistance that followed exposed how deeply caste prejudice remained embedded in society.

The movement came at a heavy cost. Dalit families were attacked, homes were burned, livelihoods were destroyed, and lives were lost simply because they stood for equality and justice. Yet, despite years of violence, intimidation, and political resistance, the movement did not retreat. It became a symbol of resilience, proving that the fight for human dignity cannot be defeated by fear.

After nearly sixteen years of struggle, the demand was fulfilled on 14 January 1994 with the official renaming of the institution as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The Namantar Andolan reminds us that equality is not granted—it is won through courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to constitutional values. The struggle was never for a name alone; it was for self-respect, representation, and the idea that every citizen deserves equal dignity.

आरक्षण उपवर्गीकरण विरोधात नांदेड जिल्हाधिकारी कार्यालय येथे सर्व आंबेडकरी पक्ष-संघटनांच्या वतीने धरणे आंदोलन करण्यात आले आहे.
