This type of exploitation is made possible when workers can't access the same statutory rights as employees, and annual leave becomes a bargaining tool.
This is why we're calling for an outright ban on Zero Hours Contracts.
In our Blog, Ian Hodson, President of Zero Hours Justice and Nation President of BFAWU details how Zero Hours Contracts are used to facilitate sexual harassment.

Analysis shows that young workers (16–24) are 5 times more likely to be on zero-hours contracts – and this doesn’t just affect students. Young workers who are not students are still 3.5 times more likely to be on zero-hour contracts. (4/7)
Ending zero hours contracts must happen if we are to end insecurity and inequality. A contract means you have rights not a loss of flexibility. Bad employers and politicians know that a zero hours contract is exploitation but it’s profitable for them. https://t.co/XEJPOk6Ev5
Beautiful @IWGB_CLB AGM yesterday bringing together members who joined after the recent food delivery strike wave & the more old school dispatch couriers. Branch resolved to put on English lessons & more social events (& more action 😉) Power building from the grassroots ❤️✊🔥
Read our latest blog post from Ian Hodson, National President of BFAWU, on why ending the exploitative nature of employment must mean banning zero-hours contracts outright.

BFAWU Conference 2024 New legislation urgently needed to protect workers from sexual harassment, food workers insist | Morning Star https://t.co/KYzvmeddtq
“When wages are so low and the cost of living is so high, people are forced to take any work they can get. We have to push back on any legislation that allows businesses the opportunity to exploit loopholes.”

At BFAWU's manifesto launch last week, the Union reaffirmed their commitment to calling for a ban on Zero Hours Contracts. @BFAWUOfficial know that Zero Hours Contracts leave workers open to the worst types of exploitation and must be tackled robustly and as priority.

The enhanced right to request flexible working is just another reason we shouldn't accept the idea that Zero Hours Contracts offer mutual flexibility for employers and workers.

👏 😍 Now do Zero Hours Contracts.
This May Day, we're grateful to the Trade Unions for all of those hard fought workers' rights.
Zero Hours Contracts are STILL one of the only areas where lots of these rights are null.
And where they aren't, who can risk demanding them when the payoff can be being laid off without repercussion for the employer?
Without trade unions we wouldn't have:
• Annual leave
• Sick pay
• A two day weekend
• Maternity leave
• Protection from workplace discrimination
• 8 hour working days
• Redundancy pay
• A minimum wage
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Workplace pensions
👏 On Saturday, the right to request flexible working from the first day in a job became a legal right for all workers in the UK, after tireless campaigning by @PregnantScrewed @Timewise_UK & others.
