Wicknell Chivayo was a polarising figure in life and death. He was seen as a philanthropist and inspiration by many while others saw him as a symbol of state capture and a poster boy of high-level corruption. He was a friend of presidents and flaunted his wealth without care. He called himself "mukuru vemazuva" (Ancient of Days), but his tragic death is a reminder of the fragility of life. His death has resulted in grief across the country and yet many Zimbabweans are openly celebrating his demise. Such was his life, he was a polarising figure - loved and hated in equal measure. The late Wicknel Chivayo had a close relationship with President Emmerson Mnangagwa as seen by his unfettered access to him. In a condolence message to the Chivayo family, Mnangagwa says he was left "personally numbed and in deep shock and grief."
Kenyan president William Ruto also passed his condolences to Mnangagwa and the Chivayo family. He said; "Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent."
Chivayo's proximity to power was seen in his social media posts beside presidents such as Cyril Ramaphosa, Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), Bola Tinubu (Nigeria), Lazarus Chakwera (Malawi), Peter Mutharika (Malawi), William Ruto (Kenya) and King Mswati of Eswatini.
