Rome handed out free grain to 40,000 citizens in 73 BC. By 46 BC, Julius Caesar found 320,000 people lining up for their monthly ration. That eight-fold expansion happened in under three decades, and it shows you how welfare states actually grow.

No Roman senator stood up and announced a plan to addict a third of the city to government bread. It happened incrementally, through political competition. Each magistrate who wanted votes expanded eligibility. Each expansion normalized the next one. The citizen who once considered the dole shameful eventually expected it, then demanded it, then organized politically to protect it.

This is the core mechanism free market thinkers have identified across every era: once you create a transfer program, you create a constituency for that program. Recipients vote. Administrators build careers. Grain merchants who supply the state develop a stake in keeping the contracts flowing. The political economy locks in.

Caesar, to his credit, actually cut the rolls back to 150,000 through verification audits. It was one of his more economically coherent moves, though the Senate still murdered him. His successors quietly let the numbers climb again.

What did the dole require? Massive grain imports from Sicily, Sardinia, and Egypt, organized through state logistics at state expense, funded by taxation and conquest. When the conquest revenue dried up, the obligation remained. Rome had written a check against future military success, and future military success eventually failed to arrive.

The lesson is not complicated. Distribute a benefit and you distribute dependency. Distribute dependency and you distribute political power to whoever controls the distribution. The grain dole didn't weaken Rome overnight, but it made every subsequent reform politically impossible.

T+0 sec. All datacenters die. Near-total global comms blackout instantly, including a large chunk of landlines and cellular

T+1 min. Payments and exchanges frozen. Lots of 911 routing and dispatch are datacenter-hosted: people can’t call for help.

T+15 min. ATC sees planes but loses flight planning and weather. Everything grounded, airborne traffic is voice and paper. An incident somewhere is likely.

T+1 hr. Grid operators fly blind without datacenter hosted energy management. Large regional blackouts within hours. Many pipelines get shut down preemptively.

T+2-4 hrs. Panic: no comms plus no payments is scary. Runs on stores and fuel by mid-afternoon. Police can’t dispatch or communicate beyond radio.

T+4-8 hrs. Hospitals in genuine crisis: no labs, records, pharmacy, transfers, staff management. Complex care stops. Industrial accidents accumulate as many plants have to attempt manual shutdowns.

T+8-16 hrs. Blackouts plus no police plus no comms means looting and violence at scale (1977 New York).

T+16-24 hrs. Death toll rises globally: unanswered cardiac arrests, fires, accidents, hospital and industrial failures… Several regions in the dark, without water, and lawless overnight.

Even if you turn everything back on after this it will be weeks before you can get the world running somewhat smoothly again.

The most quoted "there's no spoon" scene from Matrix is the most misunderstood scene.

The boy tells Neo the spoon doesn't exist.

Most people think this means "nothing is real, everything is simulation."

Wrong interpretation.
Completely backward.

The spoon exists. The child exists. The conversation exists.

What doesn't exist is the boundary between the spoon and Neo.

The separation is the illusion.

When you try to bend a spoon with your mind, you're operating from the assumption that "you" are separate from "spoon." Subject acts on object. Mind controls matter. That duality creates the impossibility.

The child figured out something neuroscientists are just confirming:

Your brain doesn't distinguish between self and environment the way you think it does. The neural networks that represent "your body" extend seamlessly into the networks that represent "the space around your body." The boundary exists in language, not in neural reality.

For example, a tennis racket becomes an extension of your arm, a race car becomes an extension of your body. The instrument stops being separate and starts being you.

The spoon bends because Neo stops treating it as external. The separation dissolves.

There's no spoon to manipulate because there's no separate self doing the manipulating.

This is grounded in science. Embodied cognition research shows your brain can map the tools and objects you focus on as real extensions of your body schema. Pianists’ brains often represent piano keys within their finger map. Surgeons’ brains can represent their instruments as extended limbs.

The Matrix scene was accidentally teaching applied neuroscience disguised as sci fi philosophy.

The real takeaway:
Stop trying to change things outside yourself. Recognize that the "outside" is a cognitive construction.

The spoon bends when you realize you are the spoon.

Stop Cheering for Slop

A viral video of a man slapping somebody at a baseball game for not standing for the National Anthem had all the slop-pushing cheerleaders yelling online.

A perfect example of how the lowest-intelligence groupthink slop thrives online.

People like @patrickbetdavid and @JesseBWatters lauded this man as some type of hero for breaking the law and the sloppers gobbled it up.

If only we could use critical thinking skills and take the hard position even when our audience might not like it, we'd have better discourse.

If you were going to destroy a largely Christian nation in ~200 years, here's part of how you might do it in 6 steps...

Spiritual warfare doesn't just happen at the individual level; it happens at the societal level.

1) Creation of a welfare state in ~1935 to financially incentivize millions of people to come to that country, because if you can get here, the United States is now on the hook to pay for you. Before ~1935 there was ~nothing to receive from the government.

***Side note: one of the often-forgotten parts of the immigration conversation is that people will point at the Statue of Liberty and say, "What about 'Give us your tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free!?"

But they forget that statement [written in 1880's] was before the creation of a welfare state. So what was originally simply a welcome to come is now a command to the citizens of the United States to pay for the people who come and a financial incentive to come en masse.

2) Open the borders so that ~80M people, many from predominantly non-Christian countries, follow that financial incentive and come, thus diluting Christian influence over time + providing ever-growing voting blocs of people with diametrically opposed interests, beliefs, and values.

3) Reinterpret (primarily in late 1940's) "religious liberty" concept / First Amendment to mean that the US Government will now treat all world religions the same – false religions inspired by unholy spirits the same as the true one inspired by the Holy Spirit.

This allows people from other religions to...

A) Run for public office unfettered
B) Try to legislate from those opposing value viewpoints
C) Do so with inbuilt voting blocs created by #1 and #2

4) Convince Christians en masse it's actually unChristian to oppose 1, 2, and 3 by misapplying....

- "Feed the poor"
- "Welcome the sojourner"
- The historically Christian concept of religious liberty

... and discipling Christians en masse into political ambiguity ("the gospel is neither Right nor Left" = sum total of political applications of the gospel) or political passivity (any political engagement or will by Christians = interpreted as "political idolatry", yucky "culture warring", etc.

6) Secular progressive "long march through the institutions" beginning in the ~1960's, resulting in universities / public institutions reverse-discipling upcoming generations away from Christianity.

6) Let all that cook for a ~100 years, and boom... that might be how you could destroy a largely and uniquely Christian nation if you were waging societal-level spiritual warfare.
