The January 17th, 1994 magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake severely impacted Southern California.

@C_T_1954@JudithGeology I came over to say the same thing as Cliff! He provides a clear explanation. Attenuation and amplification are two different aspects of the wave propagation. Amplification does not eat up energy.
Tonight's M4.3 earthquake was centered in Carson, near Long Beach. It was caused by strike-slip motion (side-by-side sliding) on a fault near the Newport-Inglewood fault zone. Small aftershocks can be expected over the next several hours. #earthquake#LongBeach
M4.3 at 7:58 PM today (=2:58 UTC on 9/18). Felt the p-wave roughly 3 seconds before the stronger shaking. Confirmed by my instrument's processed data (p~2:58:39; s~2:58:42).

So far the 2021 @SCEC meeting is off to a GRAND start! Another year of screen grabs alas, but if there's anything being a Cleveland Browns fan has taught me, it's the power of hope for "next year". #scecmeet#scec2021
Continuing down memory lane (or is it a dark desert highway?). The 2016 meeting featured “The Periodic Table of @SCEC Leadership”. @ramonarrowsmith is slotted in for “Ra”, but truthfully, I don’t think he would ever secretly kill Marie Curie. #scecmeet#scec2021

The June 2021 SCEC Newsletter features an introduction from the director, Yehuda Ben-Zion, and a congratulations to co-director Greg Beroza for receiving the Humboldt Research Award - as well as topics on modeling, software, and mentoring: https://t.co/B6iYz0Nmyq.
A month ago: shaking experienced in #ridgecrest during the M7.1 #earthquake. Super8 parking lot with our GEER reconnaissance team. Had to brace myself not to fall.

Good morning! Scientist and engineer Christine Goulet of the Southern California Earthquake Center, headquartered at @USCDornsife, approaches a fault in Kern County that shifted after 6.4 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes earlier this month. Photo/Kenneth Hudson
Comparison of @Microsoft365 and @GoogleAI slides real time auto-caption. Recording of @FaultCracker talking about earthquake hazards in her lovely Québécois accented English. Office365 has punctuation but since I use my residual hearing, I prefer the lesser lag of google slides.
“To get rid of assholes, you have to change the reward structure.”
@AdamMGrant (via WorkLife podcast)
If we want to change our academic culture, we need to start rewarding people who work elevate others instead of being obsessed with elevating themselves.
