Recently, I decided I wanted to read every page of one of my favorite websites, @OurWorldInData.
I’m about halfway now.
Here are the 30 most surprising things I’ve learned about the world so far! 🧵
"The 1.5-degree limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels.
Not reduce.
Not abate.
Phaseout."

Cars profoundly disfigure cities. They result in all kinds of distortions when it comes to the use of land and distances between uses, creating a non-virtuous circle. Because of cars we design for cars and then…we need more cars. There is only one fix: and it’s a dense, walkable transit-oriented transformation of our cities and regions.

Up until the 1990s, Canada was building 20,000 non-profit, co-op and deeply affordable homes every single year.
Since then, that number has plummeted.
It’s time for our govt to get back into the business of building homes for everyone. #onpoli
The Therme spa proposal at Ontario Place has not been approved by the City of Toronto. There are places for it, but not there. Destruction of the hundreds of trees on the West Island would be an act of bad faith by the Ford government. Our public waterfront is worth fighting for.
Help save the #OntarioScienceCentre by participating in this letter-writing campaign.
It's a provincewide campaign and the goal is to get 201 signatures per riding to reach 25,000 voters in total. #onpoli

Thank you @maritstiles! Kudos for listening to Ontarians who don’t want the MegaSpa, and do want to be consulted on what comes next at Ontario Place; it’s our money, and it’s our Ontario Place! #topoli#onpoli#SaveOntarioPlace
As Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford should be listening to local leaders, not land speculators. And local leaders have been crystal clear: they want real leadership on the housing crisis, and they want Bill 23 repealed.

I am pleased that both the Integrity Commissioner and the Auditor General have agreed to investigate Ford’s decision to break his often-repeated promise and open up certain areas of protected Greenbelt land for development. #onpoli
In case they need reminding, I’ve compiled a list of all the times Doug Ford and his housing minister Steve Clark said they wouldn’t touch the #Greenbelt (caution: long 🧵 ahead):
There's still time to Save The Greenbelt!
Public comment on giving Greenbelt land to sprawl developers is open until Dec 4

System 002/A keeps on cleaning - over 6.9 tons of plastic removed from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in less than 4 days. The new larger Retention Zone is working well, our efficiency and catch figures are improving, and we are continuing our transition to System 03.
BREAKING: Our study, published today in @SciReports, reveals that 75% — 86% (by weight) of plastic debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) comes from fishing activities at sea. (1/6)
