A Zimbabwean AI researcher at University of Cape Town, Simbarashe Mawere, is part of a team who have developed a new specialised LLM called MzansiLM.
The LLM was trained specifically on South Africaโs 11 official written languages including Zulu, Ndebele, Sepedi, Sotho, with strong performance in Zulu and Xhosa.
Their goal is to solve the problem of popular LLMs like ChatGPT and Deepseek being quite poor at local African languages.
MzansiLM is not a general-purpose chatbot though. It's a base model designed for developers and researchers to create applications such as text summarization, annotation, and local-language technology.
The model was open sourced and is publicly available on Hugging Face to encourage further local-language tech development. You can access it yourself if you'd like to geek out!
The Promise and the Peril of Artificial Intelligence
Does humanity fully understand the transformative power of AI -- the vast opportunities it presents to all social and economic sectors?
Does humanity fully grasp the potential dangers of AI?
What happens when the technology is in the hands of bad actors (individuals, organizations or states)?
What of Data Colonialism, Digital Imperialism and Techno-Feudalism?
Does humanity fully comprehend the implications and dangers of Artificial General Intelligence and Artificial Superintelligence?
We address all these questions through a Public Lecture at Midlands State University (MSU) in Zimbabwe on 12 May 2026, 0900am -- 1230hrs.
If you bring deep expertise in economic research, policy engagement, and resource mobilisation, this is an opportunity to shape Africaโs development agenda at scale.

Iโve been an angel investor since around 2014, focusing primarily on early-stage startups in the technology space.
Over the years, Iโve typically come in at a very specific point in a startupโs journey:
Not at idea stageโbut just after.
These are businesses that:
- Have built a minimum viable product (MVP)
- Are beginning to enter the market
- And are facing what many call โthe valley of deathโ
This is the stage where:
- Founders have exhausted personal savings
- Friends and family funding has run out
- Institutional investors still consider them โtoo earlyโ
Thatโs where I, often with a small syndicate of like-minded investors, step in.
We take equity.
We back the founders.
We take the risk.
But hereโs the uncomfortable truth:
Angel investing in Africa is fundamentally differentโand significantly harderโthan in more developed ecosystems.
Not because of lack of talent.
Not because of lack of ideas.
But because of structural realities we donโt talk about enough.
In this series, Iโll share some of the biggest challenges Iโve encountered investing in early-stage startups across Africaโand why we need to rethink how we approach this space.
