Not many people know Dolly Parton dropped a county's school dropout rate from 35% to 6%
Dolly created The Buddy Program
In 1991, she walked into a room of 7th and 8th graders in Tennessee and told them to pick a buddy
Everyone signed a contract saying if both of you graduate high school, you each get $500 from her personally
But if one of you drops out, neither gets paid
This remains one of the best incentive structures to this day
Dolly Parton’s duet of “When I Get Where I’m Going” with Brad Paisley hits a whole lot harder now that she’s gone.
When I get where I’m going
and I see my Maker’s face
I’ll stand forever in the light
of His amazing grace.
When get where I’m going
there’ll be only happy tears.
Hallelujah.
I am ready
Oh, my children
When Jesus knocks at my door
I'll be there come morning
Don't weep for me
I'll be with my Lord
There's my Bible on the table
Read it to me once more
I can hear God's heavenly angels
Singing me on through heaven's door
Hallelujah Lord
I am ready
No more sorrow
Hallelujah, yes
I am ready, I am ready
I am ready to go
Oh, Hosanna
Take my hand now
Lead me to the promised land now
I am ready, I am ready
Hallelujah, I am ready to go
Oh, Hosanna
I am ready to go
I can hear God's heavenly angels
Singing me on through heaven's door
Singing me on through heaven's door
And I am ready
(Dolly Parton, “I Am Ready,” 1999).
I just spent the last hour watching all the old Dolly clips on my timeline. Some I'd seen before, some I hadn't. And dang, she's truly one of one.
She radiated goodness from deep in her soul. A light in a dark world 💔
@horadrimsage@SMB_Attorney I started paying through their app as soon as I realized I could use a virtual card on my credit card set up only for Walmart. Skimmers seem rampant where I am.
@tctheatc@ss11263@GallagherShow@cvspharmacy Except according to the laws in most states, you do. The pharmacist may not be handing you the medication, but they have to be there as the person in charge, in case a customer has a problem or question about their medication, etc. Your interaction doesn't negate the law.
@ReturnToReagan@MarkDavis I have an acquaintance who is in a mom's group that has done this for years! Yeah, 10-15 liberal women on their own don't make a dent, but I don't think it's that unusual.
@SaltyGoat17 I recently needed a copy of my birth certificate so I could get my passport. I was born in California and it was stupid slow compared to getting records in Texas, even by mail. My daughter got hers in person (TX) b/c she worked near the clerk's office & did it at lunch.
@___Patrice___ If my students actually did this, I would be thrilled. But no, they take an assignment, feed it to AI and don't read what it spits out. Even when I embed hidden instructions for the AI, such as "insert a k in every 5th word" or "in the conclusion describe how a dog did the lab."
My wife raised five kids. Two are married now.
This week, she wrote out her job description for the new season. Mother of married children. I have not stopped thinking about it.
Her list:
Love their spouses like my own children.
Pray for their marriages. Daily.
Encourage them when it gets hard. It gets hard.
Never assume authority in their home. I have none there.
Never speak a negative word about their spouse. To them or to anybody.
Support their decisions as a couple without feeling entitled to an opinion.
Model what I want them to become. Character. Forgiveness. Growth.
And the last one. The one that costs the most:
Accept that I now hold a less important place in my children's lives. And accept it with grace.
Twenty-four years married. She learned the hardest job a mother ever gets is the demotion.
Nobody teaches this.
She just did.
Mike Rowe just made Bill Maher's audience gasp. He says young men aren't volunteering, joining clubs, or doing anything productive because they're spending 2,100 hours a year staring at a screen.
It's actually even worse than he said: the average Gen Z adult spends ~9 hours a day — over 3,200 hours a year — on a screen.
This is the biggest reason for two decades of social decay: screens replaced face-to-face human contact.
@Milajoy I would switch instantly. We already have Starlink Internet. Assuming the same connectivity for phones, it would be great! I had better cell signal in remote spots in Ireland than my rural home in TX, same phone, on T-Mobile's international pass. I need better coverage here!
@conservmillen I've been anti-pit bull ever since my coworker lost her newborn son to the family pitbull, who they'd raised from a puppy and who had always been around their two older children.
The Constitution does NOT give you rights. You already have them.
The Constitution simply tells the government that it cannot take those s rights away.
I wish more people understood this.
