Disinformation often triggers strong emotions. It can spread quickly when people react with outrage, excitement, or shock. But just because something is viral doesn't mean it's true. Bots and fake accounts can boost content using algorithms, making it seem more popular than it really is. Social media and messaging apps make it easy to share things fast. AI tools can also create fake profiles and help spread false or misleading content with little real engagement.

#MedDMO landed today at... the headquarters of the journalists in #Athens, enjoying a full house! Together with the Journalists Union of Athens Daily Newspapers and the Greek National Council for Radio and Television, we co-organized an information day on the effects of disinformation. @nikossarris spoke about the work of #EDMO and the local observatories in addressing the problem, specifically referring to media literacy actions and irregularity detection tools. The presence of students is an encouraging sign for the future of defending a healthy information environment in #Greece, #Cyprus and #Malta!

Generative AI (GenAI) has undeniably revolutionized people's content creation skills, but it's also crucial to acknowledge that it has the potential to be misused, leading to harmful outcomes. Here's a breakdown of the most common reasons bad actors are using AI to generate synthetic content:
𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻: From fake videos of politicians to misleading election images, AI manipulates how we think and vote. Political disinformation is a growing threat fueled by AI-generated deepfakes and fake news.
𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆: Some actors are flooding the internet with AI-generated books, reviews, and products to make quick profits. But there's a darker side—non-consensual intimate images (NCII) are being created and sold, exploiting public figures and everyday people alike.
𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗺𝘀 & 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗱: Fraudsters now use AI to impersonate trusted people, like executives or family members, to steal money or sensitive information. The realistic audio and video make scams harder to detect.
𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: From deepfake pornography to defamatory audio clips, AI is giving cyberbullies and harassers new tools to attack people online, particularly targeting women and public figures.
