On Ayanda Kota, an upright man

Tshisimani notes with pain and sadness of the passing of comrade Ayanda Kota, a gallant fighter for justice and social change in Makhanda and beyond. As an activist we have interacted with in our programs, shared platforms with him in political debates and rubbed shoulders in the trenches, Ayanda has not only proven to be ever ready to give a sharp critique to structural dehumanization of the poor but took active steps to build counter-power from below. From the struggles of access to water, food, education and other dignity-enhancing essentials to taking an unwavering stand against corruption, exclusion and exploitation of the vulnerable, comrade has been at the forefront. A dedicated activist whose work has always embodied the necessary balance of theory and action, his work left activists and community in struggle with very valuable lessons.

As Tshisimani, we honor and respect the contribution he has made in the struggles of the poor. To his family, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences and wishing you strength for such a painful loss. To the individuals and collectives he diligently worked with to build a fighting movement, don’t give up the fight.

Lala ngoxolo qabane, your works will never be forgotten.
