Sudanese activists warn that security forces may be moving to further restrict peaceful protest.
Political activist Moneeb Abdelaziz was arrested in Northern State after demonstrating on 19 Dec to mark the December Revolution, calling for an end to the war and for the army to leave politics. He now faces charges that carry the death penalty.
As protests re-emerged in Omdurman and other cities, riot police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, while figures linked to Islamist militias signalled new security measures.
Activists say the return of peaceful mobilisation has challenged the war narrative and may trigger a renewed crackdown.

Beam Reports Investigation Uncovers: “Blood Ingots: How Sudan’s Gold is Smuggled to Fund Its Brutal War”
The investigation reveals active gold smuggling routes across northern, eastern, southern, and western Sudan following the outbreak of war in April 2023. The gold is trafficked through four neighboring countries and two regional ones, ultimately reaching its final destination in the United Arab Emirates.
As part of the investigation, Beam Reports traveled alongside sources knowledgeable about smuggling operations across Sudan’s regions—north, east, west, and south—tracking active, armed smuggling routes run by domestic and international networks that have converged on Sudan’s gold amidst a war that has created severe security chaos in Africa’s third-largest gold-producing country.
"Armed men on motorcycles, smuggle Sudanese gold from South Darfur to El Geneina in West Darfur, and from there to Adré in Chad through several crossings. On both sides of the border, traders and intermediaries/Brokers move in armed four-wheel-drive vehicles. Others also cross into Chadian territory under the protection of armed Rapid Support Forces personnel, in a paid-for service," says Mohammed (a pseudonym) to Beam Reports, Mohammed is a Sudanese gold trader with extensive connections to the Sudanese government and neighboring countries. He has visited most of Sudan’s gold mines and has personally taken part in numerous smuggling trips.
While the Sudanese government has announced new plans to combat smuggling in areas under its control, our investigation, by contrast, reveals a sharp increase in gold exports from countries such as Uganda, Chad, and Egypt—alongside a drop in Sudan’s official gold exports over two years of war, to nearly half of its actual production.
The investigation also traces the rise of gold production in Sudan beginning in 2012, following South Sudan’s secession in 2011, when gold became a substitute for oil in the government’s national budget. It examines the Central Bank of Sudan’s monetary policies during certain periods that contributed to the surge in gold smuggling.
The report also documents the ongoing battles over control of gold mines between armed groups and foreign companies, and how smuggling over the past two years has fueled the war in Sudan. It further reveals how cross-border traders and intermediaries/Brokers routinely falsify the origin of Sudanese gold—rebranding it with new paperwork from the destination countries—despite the ability of laboratories to detect Sudanese gold’s genetic signature. Yet the smuggling networks involved show no concern for this.

The #UN’s continuing “decrying,” “condemning,” and “outrage” mean absolutely nothing for the dead of Abu #Shouk and El #Fasher—or for the future victims of the #RSF’s ethnic assaults, whose number continues to grow. The realities are undisputed; responses are nowhere in sight.
My family of 10 is fully dependent on me. In these harsh circumstances, the only thing I can do is post here and pray for your support.
