After years of War Communism - forced grain seizures, nationalisation of industry and the abolition of private trade - the Soviet economy collapsed. The result was the devastating famine of 1921–22, which killed millions. Facing economic ruin and peasant revolts, Lenin made a pragmatic retreat. In 1921 he introduced the New Economic Policy (NEP).

The NEP allowed peasants to keep and sell most of their surplus after paying a fixed tax. Small private businesses and trade were legalised again. The results were dramatic. Agricultural production recovered quickly, markets reappeared and living standards improved. Even the Bolsheviks had to acknowledge that allowing people to keep the fruits of their labour worked far better than centralised coercion.

The NEP was never intended as a permanent return to markets. It was a tactical concession. After Lenin’s death, Stalin used it as a political weapon. He accused the policy of creating a new class of wealthy peasants (“kulaks”) and “NEPmen” who threatened socialist principles. In 1928–29, Stalin abolished the NEP entirely. He replaced it with forced collectivisation and central planning. The consequences were catastrophic: another man-made famine, the destruction of millions of lives, and the imposition of a command economy that would define the Soviet Union for the rest of its existence.

The NEP is one of the clearest historical demonstrations that even committed socialists could not escape economic reality for long.

In Gladsaxe, located just north of Copenhagen, officials replaced conventional white LEDs with red-spectrum lighting along a stretch of road and a popular cycling path. The project aims to maintain safe illumination for people while minimizing harm to local wildlife, particularly bats.

Many nocturnal animals are highly sensitive to bright white light, which can interfere with essential behaviors such as foraging, navigation, and migration. Bats are especially affected, some species avoid lit areas entirely, while others change their hunting strategies when exposed to artificial lighting.

The new red lights are designed to be far less disruptive to bats. The installation also incorporates intentional dark zones between lamp posts, creating safe corridors that allow light-sensitive animals to move freely through the landscape. Despite the color change, the lighting still meets all required safety standards for cyclists and pedestrians.

Project leaders emphasize that cities no longer need to choose between public safety and biodiversity. As urban expansion increases light pollution worldwide, affecting insects, birds, mammals, and even plant ecosystems, such targeted solutions offer a practical path forward.

Researchers are now monitoring the Gladsaxe project to evaluate its effectiveness in protecting wildlife. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for other cities seeking to reduce the environmental impact of artificial lighting.
