Today, leading medical researchers from across the nation are stepping into Parliament, joining my call for the government to release the funds being withheld from the Medical Research Future Fund.
We must fund medical research properly. With the Trump administration slashing healthcare spending in the United States, Australia has a unique opportunity to become a global leader in medical innovation and biotech.
With the stroke of a pen, the government could make it happen today.

Australia’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) is sitting on billions of taxpayers’ dollars which was meant to be invested in world-leading, lifesaving health innovations.
We could more than double the amount spent from the MRFF every year, while keeping more money in the fund than it was intended to hold—a win-win for medical researchers and our economy.
Increased investment in medical research won’t just secure our research sector and guarantee its growth and longevity – it will improve health outcomes for all Australians.
Our latest work on the role of STING in autoinflammation. STING proton channel activity influences Golgi transit & secretion of cytokines through ArfGAP2.
ArfGAP2 promotes STING proton channel activity, cytokine transit, & autoinflammation: Cell https://t.co/tXF2mWgqLB
#WeekendRead! #EveryCellisAnImmuneCell! Park, Ahn & Barber show @SciImmunology that DNA-damaged cells activate cGAS-STING secreting factors & induce endosomal vesicles that activate in antigen-presenting cells cGAS-STING inducing immune activation! https://t.co/yjYwjO8vAw
Excited to share our latest in @Nature led by @SwingleKelsey on new mRNA LNP tech to treat life-threatening pregnancy disorders! Kelsey shows that LNPs engineered to deliver mRNA to the placenta can normalize vascular tissue to ameliorate pre-eclampsia:

📢 World-leading Immunologists. The Nossal Endowed Chair of Immunology has just been announced @WEHI_research. This is your chance to move (or return) to Australia to do ground-breaking research and join a thriving environment for discovery and translation https://t.co/RaXl6V4yN4
#WeekendRead! #FungiPower! @IlievLab show @Nature that the stomach of wild, not lab, mice is colonized by an immunosilent fungus! Mucus alterations via diet or antibiotics drive a Th2 -not Th17- response that worsens allergy but protects against parasites! https://t.co/aDzTWMLfhH
🎉 Congratulations to our luminary of ACDS, Prof. Kate Schroder (@inflammasomelab, @IMBatUQ) on her incredible success in the 2025 ARC Discovery Projects! She has received an impressive $615,000 to validate a novel signalling effector that induces cell death. 👩🔬
Another big congratulations to our members for their success in the 2025 ARC DP:
👏A/Profs Kate Lawlor & Thomas Naderer @Hudson_Research
👏Dr @_drkatemc_ (2 DPs!)
👏Prof Marco Herold @onjcri_ceo
👏Prof Tri Phan @GarvanInstitute
👏Dr @LarisaLabzin
Incredible achievements!🚀
Our amazing Vice President, 🌟Dr Sabrina Sofia Burgener @s_burgener (@inflammasomelab, @IMBatUQ) has secured TWO ARC Discovery Projects totalling over $1 MILLION!!! Your hard work and dedication to advancing science are absolutely inspiring. We’re so proud of you, Sabrina! 🚀🎉👏
This study [link] shows how necroptotic effector MLKL can induce obesity and perturb lipid metabolism to drive MAFLD progression, independent of RIPK3 that regulates inflammatory events.@_KateLawlor@CiiiD_Hudson@Hudson_Research@WEHI_research

Very proud & excited to be socialising our preprint uncovering new mechanisms of epithelial cell death in IBD! Massive 4-year collab across @WEHI_research & @RMH. Big thanks to the patients involved in this study and support from @NHMRC & @KR_Foundation

Check out our latest from @WEHI_research A joint effort with James Vince’s lab and our RMH colleagues. Super proud of this epic built on ~1100 western blots. Full credit to the leads, Jiyi Pang and Aysha Al-Ani, our collaborators, and my coconspirators including @AndreSamson15
In this study, Tye et al show how RIPK3-caspase-8 signaling induces inflammation to drive MAFLD, while MLKL noncanonically regulates lipid accumulation and metabolism to drive obesity and MAFLD. @_KateLawlor@CiiiD_Hudson@Hudson_Research@WEHI_research
