The British Tory Party is full of people who can tell you what "Lord Salisbury" did in 1869, or what "Daniel Defoe" said in 1719 - after all, they tend to study "The Classics" at top public schools and "Ancient and Modern History" at Cambridge and Oxford.

Their Labour counterparts tend to study similar degrees at Oxbridge, but prefer to stick to more contemporary social topics.

Having said that; what these people are not equipped to do; is initiate and complete 21st Century infrastructure projects, or adequately prepare Britain for the 21st Century.

There's no Isambard Kingdom Brunel to be found anywhere.

(The French still do infrastructure quite well - I guess the legacy of Jean-Baptiste Colbert still lives on, their Grandes Écoles prepare their leadership well for this).

Britain has a lot of history, and they love discussing it - but I am not quite sure this works that well in a world of hardnosed technocrats in Northeast and Southeast Asia (just listen to Singaporean cabinet ministers).

(As for Nigerian "leadership", if such a thing exists, it has no redeeming qualities).

Sister Ugboaja, a Nigerian cleric, was snatched off the street while walking to Mass in her full habit. Dressed as a nun and holding legal status, she was left traumatised, distraught, & denied medicine by armed agents. Yet I haven't seen this level of vim from online pastorpreneurs.

There is a disturbing pipeline between Nigerian Pentecostalism & American Christian Nationalism. Many have bought into a "King Cyrus" theology that excuses outright racism, xenophobia, and cruelty as long as conservative power is protected and bathrooms stay male and female.

They believe that their proximity from Ojota to American Christian conservatism, even when it calls them inferior, somehow supersedes whatever evil or immorality is under the hood. As long as "Christ is in the White House".

They fail to see that when hardliners rail against "illegal immigrants", the word "illegal" is completely silent. It's a racially charged dog whistle where "immigrant" can be replaced with any Black or minority body, regardless of their visa status.

I wonder if you have sat down and asked, "What would Jesus do?" because there is nothing I haven't seen this particular account justify in a bid to rationalise white Christian ethnonationalist talking points.

Day 3 (English) of me telling you to avoid Libya.

The risk of abduction is high.

I met a Nigerian who was abducted, tortured, used as a slave by the Arabs for 8 months, and he still paid a ransom for his freedom.

I met a young man from Edo who was abducted and sent to Central Africa Republic (CAR), then got sold to a second set of kidnappers. After two captivity spells and five months on the road without getting to his destination in Libya, he made a U-turn to Nigeria.

I was almost kidnapped myself.

And guess what? If you get abducted and you pay the ransom quickly, problem. If you pay it late, problem!

THE CIA'S CAPITALIST CORRUPTION OF RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS

If you live in the Global South, it has probably never crossed your mind to wonder whether there is a link between the religion you practise and the American Central Intelligence Agency’s Cold War strategy. As far as most people are aware, their chosen faith and its mode of practice are individual decisions that even friends and family may not exert influence over, much less a state intelligence extension of a global superpower.

The truth however, is sometimes stranger than fiction because the CIA - by its own decision - exerted a tremendous amount of influence over growth and spread of certain religious doctrines across the Global South during the Cold War. In an effort to prevent or roll back the spread of Communism, one of its tactics was to fund the spread of niche Christian and Islamic doctrines which emphasised “personal responsibility” and individualism over collectivism, shared responsibility and group action.

Decades later, hundreds of millions of Global Southerners still worship and express their faiths under subverted forms of Christianity and Islam whose spread was funded by the CIA as part of a wider ideological subversion effort in the 1970s and 1980s. Driven by these hyper-individualist doctrines, millions of the world’s poorest people today remain stuck in the doomed cycle of trying to be ruthless capitalists without any capital to speak of, and blaming themselves for their “failures” instead of banding together for collective economic and political action.

For the oppressed peoples of the world, it is important to remember that empire does not respect any rules or boundaries including religious or ideological ones - everything within the empire’s reach can and will be weaponised. To remove ourselves from its control, we must first recognise the extent to which even our closest held thoughts and beliefs have been co-opted in its service.
