The bare-bellied hedgehog is endemic to the arid regions of the five states in south India, with the highest number of sightings reported from Tamil Nadu. @ArathimenonM reports.

Hedgehogs can chomp down ~ 40 insects per hour - they are considered a farmer’s best friend.
Despite their spiky exterior, they can satiate the hunger of predators such as the Indian fox, jackal, and mongoose.

A map artwork that illustrates the extent & value of India’s open natural ecosystems such grasslands, deserts, rocky outcrops & shrub lands that are otherwise considered wastelands. Through this, we hope to raise awareness & call for better policies to safeguard these. @atree_org

Bustards have always coexisted with traditional livelihoods such as grazing and rainfed agri, and indeed depended on them. Conserving grasslands is good for people, climate and biodiversity.
A few days back 12 together was in the news, now see 16 #GIB together in a single frame. Kudos to the efforts of habitat conservation by all stakeholders, we need such photos periodically and regularly.

Great news for Bengaluru's grasslands! After a decade-long effort by environmentalists Mahesh Bhat, Seshadri KS and Ramki Sreenivasan, the Hesaraghatta grasslands, spanning over 5,000 acres, have finally been declared a conservation reserve. This will help protect this vital ecosystem for future generations. Check out the article using the link in bio.

The Thar Desert in India, an important stopover area for migrating birds, is also prone to outbreaks of desert locusts, occurring unpredictably, often coinciding with their stopover time. We tracked nine tagged Montagu’s Harriers (Circus pygargus) for five years to determine if the duration of their stopover at the sites is influenced by the availability of the migratory locusts or other factors.
