Life is unpredictable. There are many unexpected problems that will pop up, and I’ve found that two things help me sail choppy water during the day.
Both are done in the morning: A) read a few pages of Stoicism, like Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations, and B) control at least a few things you can control.
First, for A, here is one Marcus Aurelius quote on my refrigerator that often does the trick:
“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own—not of the same blood or birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me.”
Now, B) control what you can control. No matter how shitty your day is, no matter how catastrophic it might become, you can make your bed.
And that gives you the feeling, at least it gives me the feeling, even in a disastrous day, that I’ve held on to the cliff ledge by a fingernail and I haven’t fallen.
SOUTH AFRICA, YOU LITTLE BEAUTY 🇿🇦❤️For the last few years, I have been deeply frustrated with the state of our nation, but then I started traveling all over the country, and my view of things became more balanced. Today I want to celebrate the good things about South Africa, and there is a lot of good!
When I really think about it, I love this country to death. It's just our government that I'm not a big fan of. We have so many incredible features to celebrate as a nation, and I'd like to remind you of some of them today:
1. South Africans are just lekker. Yes, there are always a few bad apples, but on the overall, we are a resilient bunch who have managed to stay friendly and optimistic, despite all the things we have to deal with.
I can personally tell you, as someone who travels overseas a lot internationally, whenever I come back home, the warmth of our people is distinct. We take everything in our stride, we always have a smile on our face, and we always make a plan (sometimes to a fault).
2. Our weather and climate are near impossible to beat. Very few countries around the world get to enjoy sunshine the way we do. We don't really have four seasons. It's more like summer for eight months, then mostly spring with winter before 10am and after 5pm for about two months 🤣
3. We have the most incredible natural beauty across the country. Again, I can tell you from personal experience, and as someone who has traveled South Africa flat, we are blessed beyond what we realise. And I'm not just talking about Cape Town 🖐️
Every little city and town across the country has such a unique flavour. Our garden route should be labeled as the 9th wonder of the world. The Karoo is breathtaking. Our mountain passes are majestic. Our many bush lodges make every foreigner wish they lived here. And our wine farms are best in class around the world. It certainly doesn't hurt that our wine is cheap compared to the rest of the world either!
I could literally write a book as to why I am proudly South African, but for time sake I will just say this:
✅ Despite all our problems, we never say die, and we always make a plan. We work hard, we play hard, and we laugh A LOT!
✅ May our South African spirit never die, even when the very government that is meant to protect us does the very opposite.
✅ We are South African. Loud and proud. Anyone who's lived abroad knows this, especially when you bump into other South Africans around the world!
So I guess what I'm trying to say is... Happy Heritage Day 🇿🇦❤️
Fast, lift, sprint, stretch, and meditate.
Build, sell, write, create, invest, and own.
Read, reflect, love, seek truth, and ignore society.
Make these habits. Say no to everything else.
Avoid debt, jail, addiction, disgrace, shortcuts, and media
Relax. Victory is assured.

Caffeine is one of the few drugs people use to feel normal, alcohol is one of the few drugs people use to seem normal, and cannabis is a drug that makes the normal seem more interesting.

Alcohol is far worse for us than most believe. Zero is indeed better than any & beyond 2 drinks per week, negative health effects accumulate. There are ways to offset/reverse that. All that & more including hangovers & remedies on the Huberman Lab Podcast: https://t.co/obavwRbl60
