@linusgrann Coop Mastercard + Amex blue.
This is the Trump admin folding yet again btw.
There is no actual deal announced. What happened was tariffs on China were increased to 145%, now they're reduced to 30% total for the next 90 days with zero current commitments from China.
30% (20% original + 10% reciprocal) is still a high tariff rate that will lead to increased prices, and previous price increases aligned with the 145% tariff will obviously remain in place (e.g. Xbox price hike).
While there will likely be a deal down the line, it'll probably be reminiscent of 2020 where China made some unimportant commitments and then never followed through on them anyway.
All this stunt has done (and will continue to do) is damage US credibility on the world stage, reduce their negotiating capacity with other states, and hurt US businesses and consumers with higher prices. This is not as simple as going back to where we were prior to April. The damage has been done.
US media and conservative pundits are going to try and memory hole all the original talking points:
- China on the verge of collapse = Not true
- Manufacturing will move back to the US = Not true
- China would eat the tariffs = Not true
- Tariffs would replace income tax = Not happening
- Trump wanted to negotiate better deals = Not happening
So what exactly was the point of the last couple of months?
@paulcerro Many pension/sovereign wealth funds have north of 60% exposure. Swedish pension funds have mentioned that they have an eye on that risk going into 2025 which means other countries are also having those discussions. I believe they will have to put some chips elsewhere regardless.
@paulcerro Trump disrespecting other allied nations with economical/military threats might be seen as risks where large institutions and pensions funds starts derisking their exposure to US. That coupled with the large concentration to the mag7 which they probably already see as high risk.
