@healingaming@_CatholicWest We ask canonized saints (real people) to pray for us, just as any friend might ask another. Prayer and community don't end with bodily death.
The Christian community is not a refuge into which we withdraw in order to protect ourselves from our age. On the contrary, like the cathedrals of old, the Church is a place of welcome, respect, revelation, and meaning for everyone. The strength of a living Church lies in welcoming those on the peripheries who already have a place in her heart; welcoming those who are far away but in reality are already near; welcoming the stranger, in whom Christ is already knocking at the door. #ApostolicJourney #France https://t.co/bqNVwuLgeg
@alystudiesDNA@Catholiterature@ruthdelioncourt@MMash3204 If you're talking about the handful of verses in Leviticus which prohibited the Israelites from imitating the mourning rituals of their pagan neighbors, those rules are not taught by the Church to be more generally applicable. A good Catholic defers to the Church on such matters.
@alystudiesDNA@ruthdelioncourt@MMash3204 Most Christian women, including Catholics, at least pierce their ears! You grew up with people who misrepresented their own ideas as Church teachings I think.
@alystudiesDNA@ruthdelioncourt@MMash3204 "Sanctity of life" is about opposing murder. Healing people of disorders is pretty much the opposite of murder.
Also we are not against *haircuts*, where on earth did you get that idea?
@mertonesque Blame 9/11 and subsequent exposure to & debates on everything Islamic. The fact that other traditions had/have headcoverings was often brought up to defend hijab, which IMO led to FOMO.
This is a remarkable story that most Christians will never hear.
How an Iraqi Dominican friar saved thousands of ancient Aramaic manuscripts from ISIS.
"Since the arrival of ISIS to Mosul, I felt there was a threat to culture."
The Assyro-Chaldean man, Najeeb Michaeel, had a hunch that ISIS was coming to Mosul.
Years before in 2007, he received threatening letters arrived at his monastery which each contained a broken cross and a bullet.
On the night of August 6, Fr Najeeb loaded cars & trucks with thousands of manuscripts and fled for Erbil.
"I felt that providence & heaven were with us... It was like Noah's ark."
Because of checkpoint & road closures, he had to ask strangers to help him smuggle the documents on foot.
"There was a swarm of Daesh cars with black flags hanging around. We didn't know where to go."
Thank you Fr Najeeb.
Evil stuff.
Praying this exposure leads to reforms not only in immigration detention but in all jails, prisons, etc. Medical neglect and mistreatment in such places is a pretty widespread issue.
A 36-year-old Costa Rican man whose family says he complained of missing insulin shots and meals to manage his diabetes is the third detainee to die in less than six months at an ICE facility in Louisiana. https://t.co/fQswZocwSP
@PseudoMnemonic@LadyDemosthenes Working out his salvation and engaging in a lawful expression of his sexual instinct. Perhaps the gift of children to instruct in the love of God.
@PseudoMnemonic@LadyDemosthenes St. Paul's personal opinion was that marriages come with troubles, and so it is better to remain single. You might indeed be better off celibate, and would be in the company of many holy men and women in doing so.
But also: no risk, no reward.
@JoErwin_K@mrdavidrowe@Guy_Buttersnaps@LadyDemosthenes The Mosaic law allowed husbands to nullify vows/pledges made by wives under certain circumstances, not prayers.
A *husband's* prayers on the other hand are said by St. Peter to be hindered if he mistreats his wife.
@brconaway@d08890 It varies among denominations. I would say that it's not unusual to hold that at least some 'false gods' arose from deceptive demonic influence. But how to talk about this prudently and with charity toward those of other faiths is another matter. Demonizing *people* is wrong.
