I read that post about the silica in Fiji water (collected from volcanic aquifers) helping a mother’s nonverbal autistic son to speak, and it was interesting thinking about those volcanic islands like Hawai’i for example, where the native occupants primarily ate a rich seafood diet high in mercury & other heavy metals— yet the silica from the water streams that ran from their volcanic-formed mountains that were used for their crops & drinking water (called the ahupua’a system) probably helped to filter out the heavy metals in their bloodstream. Just a cool micro example of how an environment naturally supports itself, including its creatures. Stocking up on volcano water as we speak btw
Ending TB is now about financing.

Excellent summary of our recent ICMR-INDIAB diet paper by @Toi_pushpa_n which is very important for making national policy-level decisions. The key message is that even a 5% reduction in carbohydrates in Indian diets, if replaced with plant protein or with egg or fish, can help slow down the diabetes epidemic. Nicely covered by @timesofindia and Pushpa Narayan.

When I first visited the Irula Snake Catchers’ Cooperative Society on the outskirts of Chennai, I was awestruck. I learnt that even though they supply about 80% of India's Antivenom, they never catch snakes during their breeding season.Irulas treat snakes with care, affection, and profound respect . Each snake is released back into the wild carefully after venom extraction. On this World Snake Day, let us honour one of the most misunderstood guardians of our ecosystem, snakes. And let us also celebrate the communities which protect them. We need to replace fear of snakes with facts, myths with science and advance better understanding of snake conservation through trained snake handlers and Snakebite prevention and management
