@BinLadensRifle My take is that bin Laden was more of a pragmatist. He wanted change but not endless war. 9/11 was really about two things, American boots in Arabia and servile support of Israel. He thought that the Mujahideen approach in Afghanistan against Russia might work for a second time.

And I would add - empire always wants to paint itself as being under threat to convince its citizenry of its unifying nobility. WMD in its various forms, terrorism, or global ecological catastrophe, all are used to create a commonly felt fear-factor. The consequences of its actions then matter not. All for the greater good etc. When anyone challenges any of this they too get demonised and become an internal enemy of whichever state happens to be pumping out the most extreme nonsense. After all, who would argue against anyone who claims to a guardian against those who hate any particular freedoms, even if this means completely dismantling these very same freedoms as they apply to the vast majority of innocent others in far away places?

I can see that all of this is being dragged out for as long as possible on purpose. And as much as I hate to write this, I do tend to think that the family members are being drawn in as pawns in a much bigger game. It's difficult to square away what some of them are allegedly expecting out of this when compared with how much a great many genuinely suffering veterans receive, through injuries not of their own fault. Yours is a massively litigatory (or litigational?) society, where usually the legal teams do far better than anyone else. The longer it goes on the more they get. Are the Saudis going to admit to something they didn't really have a hand in? Probably not. Are they going to blow the whistle on the CIA's internal workings and subsequent massive failings? Also probably not.
