@LauraRbnsn@2Macc1516 If she really wanted to reject modernity, she'd be writing about her amazing lifestyle with a quill and handing out her hand-written pamphlets on tradwifery in the town square
@LauraRbnsn@2Macc1516 And that's 8 hours that she isn't raising children, cleaning the home, or doing any of the many other things that would typically be the responsibility of a stay at home parent. All so she can feign rejecting modernity, while broadcasting her performance all over the internet
@Zim_of_Earth@ArizonaFleshPit@DavidAOliverJr@AlecStapp They pointed weapons (with awful technique btw) at protestors walking down the street past their house en route to the mayor's house (not on their property or targeting them). There's nothing to support "rioters", "rabbid", or did anything justifying weapons pointed at protestors
@spectreon2nd@sam_d_1995 Utilities aren't the only government service to exist. Even if you live off grid in Alaska, you still need to pay for things like the police department. How is this so difficult for you to understand?
@buildingbulldog@dmtrubman That's a lot of words to tell us you're a NIMBY vacancy truther looking for any excuse to not build new homes. The vacancy rate is shockingly low, even when you include homes briefly changing tenants, under renovation, or under legal proceedings. Take that crank shit elsewhere.
@spectreon2nd@sam_d_1995 Property taxes are the annual fee for local government services you receive. If you're on rural land with no utility service, no public transit, and dirt roads, you're going to be paying less per square foot of land than if you live in NYC. Deadbeat needs to pay for what he uses.
@spectreon2nd@sam_d_1995 This guy needs to learn to live within his means. If he can't afford the taxes, he either has an extremely expensive property or paid practically nothing toward social security. If you bought a private jet in 1960 you don't get to cry poor about the cost of hangars and fuel today
@NY_LBSS@besttrousers But if you're saying *private universities* shouldn't be allowed to do business with foreigners, that seems incompatible with free markets and how practically every other business in America operates. Will you be asking every other American company to pull out of China?
@NY_LBSS@besttrousers If you're arguing *public universities* shouldn't be setting aside seats for foreign students (or at least those from adversarial countries) & should instead raise sufficient tax revenue to replace the subsidy foreign students provide to Americans, that doesn't sound unreasonable
@ReptilianLvl94@sp6runderrated FDR got the US supreme court in check by rallying support for major reforms which would have packed it with younger justices friendlier to his policies. Even though the legislation failed, justices quickly started ruling on his favor to avoid continuing the fight
@ReptilianLvl94@sp6runderrated I feel like if judges made any moves that were too drastic (eg half of BC belongs to the native tribe now, go pack your things), legislators would step in and find a way to mitigate the impact. It would be political suicide not to. There's only so rogue the judiciary can go
@ReptilianLvl94@sp6runderrated No matter how sympathetic someone might be toward native people and the ways they've been wronged, you're going to have a hard time convincing them to voluntarily give up their house or their parents' house to the local tribe because of mistreatment 100+ years ago
@ReptilianLvl94@sp6runderrated Regardless, if you want it to be politically palatable enough to ever happen, there needs to be a solution to that problem which those millions of home owners (who vote for the politicians who decide what land to give back, if any) find acceptable
@NeoDogmaX@sgodofsk@_cjt_ The desire for more farming land for plantation owners and access to newly discovered resources like gold in their territories (which motivated the removal of the Cherokee) were far greater factors than any potential violence toward white people - especially by that point in time
@NeoDogmaX@sgodofsk@_cjt_ Those tribes had treaties with the US entitling them to their respective territories, but they were eroded bit by bit - initially from squatters and newly formed states, then eventually lost altogether when Jackson approved their full relocation.
@ReptilianLvl94@sp6runderrated It sounds fairly reasonable to give back chunks of federal land to native tribes, to be used for the benefit of everyone (eg. desperately needed housing). But a LOT of formerly native land is now owned and occupied by non-native people... that's where things get tricky
@zarathustra5150 Many American companies, especially the type that might be inclined to implement generative AI, are not used to operating in a world where interest rates significantly exceed 0%. They certainly weren't ready for them to be double anything they'd seen in 15 years, as in 2023/4
@zarathustra5150 The GPT 3.5 release also aligns almost perfectly with when interest rates hit a level we hadn't seen for about 15 years (2007/8) and kept climbing. Rates have only recently started to dip a tiny amount. I'm sure that's having a greater impact on hiring right now than LLMs.
