The full breakdown - categories, audit-grade signed records, why pre-approval scales where post-hoc filtering doesn't:

(Part 2 of a series on messaging platform design.)
Open a WhatsApp message from your bank.
You're not reading something a business wrote to you. You're reading a structure they weren't allowed to invent.
Here's why WhatsApp pre-approves every business message - and what SMS can't replicate.
🧵
If you've written backend code, you already know this pattern.
A WhatsApp template is a prepared SQL statement for messages:
- Body = SQL with placeholders
- {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}} = bind parameters
- Meta approval = query plan validation
- Send = bind values, execute, deliver
When evaluating whether to add WhatsApp to a communication platform, the instinct is: we already have SMS, why complicate the stack?
But the real question isn't whether to add it. It's how to do it without becoming the next spam problem.
A thread 🧵
I don't know if Meta designed this as a principled defense against spam, or if it was ecosystem control with good side effects.
But the effect is the same: friction wasn't added reactively. It was there from the start.
@UnipathL Tried booking expensive blood tests for 3 people, same technician for a home visit, but will charge 3x for home visit charges. Response: “Sorry Sir, that is the policy.” Petty, unrealistic, and just plain lazy policymaking. Maybe try using some common sense?
@DrJain21 Gujarat’s population 72.65m - what majority means? Number play to blame the education system and a particular state. How about you show us numbers of total people went through immigration from India and how many were Gujarati.
A fan boy moment for me. From a small city in Western of India > to US > #MSbuild2023, sitting and listening to @shanselman whom I idealise and follow since I started my journey 13 years back. Just blank and speechless ❤️
@writeexpress@csharpfritz I woke up in the middle of the night, looked at the sky and decided to believe and shout out loud - “sky is black and glittery, all the time”.
@rochakchauhan@akyriako78@CHBernasconiC Sad to see so much ignorance in tech community, Microsoft, C# and .NET has come far ahead of the time from the days where there would have been some truth to this statement. It’s like me working in the industry for 10 years and saying Java is slow, Node is just insecure JS etc.
After spnding 48000/- Rs per year, ~131 /- Rs per day, 12 days of raising a service request and 11 unreasonable, unnoticed, unethical reschedule of visit 2 fix a broken Jio Fiber connection in top five cities of the country, how is Jio the beat of all? @JioCare can you do better?
