A productive meeting took place yesterday in Nairobi between the Somali Red Crescent Society (#SRCS) leadership and Canadian Red Cross (@redcrosscanada) representatives. SRCS President Yusuf Hassan, Vice President Ahmed Jama, and OD Director Abdulkadir Afi met with Canadian Red Cross Vice-President Kesley Lemon and Head of Africa Region Ashak Sherif to discuss the humanitarian situation in Somalia and review partnership progress between both National Societies.

Later in the afternoon, the Canadian Red Cross formally signed the Movement Coordination Agreement (MCA) joining the #SRCS, @IFRC, @ICRC, and the British, Danish, Finnish, German and Norwegian Red Cross Societies, for a coordinated, localized and principled humanitarian action in Somalia. #RCRC Together for humanity!

We applaud Canada using its voice to demand that assistance reaches starving civilians. Now, immediate action is needed. Aid delivery must be restored and humanitarian actors such as PRCS need to be able to do their job safely and efficiently. Our collective humanity is at stake.

Today is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a day that we recognize the unique role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC and ICRC, which together form the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the unwavering commitment of millions of volunteers and staff worldwide.

In an increasingly complex and polarized world, where humanitarian needs grow year after year, our shared commitment to humanity is more than a guiding principle—it is a lifeline.

Today, we also remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in service of others, reminding us of the urgent need to protect humanitarian workers.

No matter where, no matter when, we always choose to stand on the side of humanity, offering hope, relief, and care to those in need.
