Traffic evaporation is a real outcome of sustained policy choices. Paris has reduced traffic by 40% in one decade and it’s a far more livable city because of it.
Public toilets and amenities OR a safe space to walk?
Why does it have to be a choice?
Can’t toilets be designed better and pedestrians be respected too?
@chennaicorp
First push pedestrians to use horrible FOBs, then block all access so we have cross madness of #OMR at grade, no pedestrian crossing, with widened roads. No wonder pedestrian deaths = 11% of fatalities. But pedestrian is always at fault! @chennaicorp@CumtaOfficial@walkingindia
Building cities for CARS, will only pave way for more CARS!
621 Crores allocated for a flyover btwTeynampet and Saidapet, potentially changing the urban fabric and Chennai’s Mount Road forever.
Gradually becoming a city of flyovers!
@CMDA_Official@chennaicorp@ChennaiTraffic
@gillesspee @CMDA_Official@chennaicorp@ChennaiTraffic Unless you wish for a city with triple decker flyovers, poor air quality, an unsafe environment for children and elderly to be outdoors without a tight grip on an able-bodied person, and where walking across the street would mean a 10minute car ride.
@gillesspee @CMDA_Official@chennaicorp@ChennaiTraffic The idea that owning a car = growth needs to be debunked, before the ill -effects of congestion can get to us.
The same 600 crores on more efficient public transportation must direct those who own cars to take the bus and metro. Building bridges is just a temporary fix.
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan Transformative Transportation is the key. Medellin & NYC are great examples of cities that were earlier dedicated to cars being transformed into one dedicated to, & in service of, its people today. They have incrementally invested in scalable infrastructure to build their future!
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan The famous Amsterdam example of oil price surge in the 70s got them to innovate their mobility patterns. Examples of traffic calming measures are plenty across the world! #CitizenChats
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan Yes. Enforcement is a big piece. Yet it is only remedial. There needs to be an earnest attempt to promote NMT infrastructure and efficient public transportation systems. And mega private projects in the city need to take responsibility to improve congestion, safety, and mobility!
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan While we can discuss at length about our poor driving behaviours, our road designs and the attitude of municipal engineers to provide utmost comfort to drivers, promote these behaviours!! #CitizenChats
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan Transportation is one of the few professions where nearly 1,55,622 people in India can lose their lives in one year (as per NCRB, in 2021) and no one in a position of responsibility is in danger of being penalised or at the least, losing their job. #CitizenChats
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan Vision Zero/Zero Fatality Projects are prevalent across the world. These projects operate around the belief that road fatalities are unacceptable. They are both policy driven and action oriented measures. In India @savelifeindia is doing some path breaking work in that respect.
@citizenmatters@mahimai79@VBChennai@sumanan Long Term - Introduce congestion pricing, build permanent infrastructure that promotes cycling and walking, Build efficient public transportation systems, develop last mile connectivity to all parts of the city, build open and inclusive public spaces. #CitizenChats
