Analysis 👇
If Wemby stays healthy and reaches the 65-game threshold, he probably wins this award. But that's a massive variable given his medical history, including the blood clot issue that cost him 36 games two seasons ago. Beyond Wemby, this race becomes significantly more unpredictable, and at nearly 20/1, I love the value on Ausar Thompson.

Chet Holmgren is the next name on the board, but awards are heavily narrative-driven, and I question whether his reputation coming off last postseason will carry the same weight. Meanwhile, Ausar is quickly becoming one of the most feared perimeter defenders in the league, and his impact is starting to receive the recognition it deserves. Cleveland's coaching staff even made a point of instructing its players to avoid throwing the ball near him during the playoffs. That's an incredible testament to the respect he's commanding defensively.

The numbers back up the eye test, too. Ausar became the first player since LeBron James in 2016 to record at least 15 steals and 15 blocks in a playoff series. At just 23 years old, he averaged 2.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game this postseason, joining Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan as the only players under 24 in NBA history to average at least 2 steals and 2 blocks during a playoff run. The advanced defensive metrics are impressive as well, reinforcing just how disruptive he is on that end.

DPOY traditionally favors big men, but Ausar's ability to impact the game as a guard and wing defender is becoming impossible to ignore. He's already sitting third in the odds ahead of established defensive stars like Rudy Gobert, and his continued development could make him a legitimate frontrunner this season.

Ultimately, this comes down to two things: Ausar's defensive ceiling and the uncertainty surrounding Wemby's availability. If Wemby misses time or falls short of the 65-game requirement, this award opens up considerably. At +1976, I'll gladly take a shot on Ausar to make the leap and bring home Defensive Player of the Year.
