My sons Sulaiman & @kasim_khan_1999 applied for visas in January (again… ) to allow them to visit their father @ImranKhanPTI in Pakistan. The Pakistan consulate states that online visa processing normally takes 7–10 working days. It has now been 60 days. This despite the public promise that they could safely travel there to see their father after 4 years, made by both Defence Minister @khawajaMAsif to @mehdirhasan & PM spokesperson @mosharrafzaidi to @SkyYaldaHakim
Meanwhile, they are not allowed to speak to him on the phone, nor send him a letter. They haven’t seen him since 2022 after he was shot in an assassination attempt.
This is an appeal directly to Pakisan’s PM @CMShehbaz to please allow Imran Khan’s two sons to see their father asap, particularly since, by all accounts, his health is in decline.

5 key points on the Saudi-Pakistan Mutual Defense Pact.

1. Saudi Arabia Goes Nuclear: This agreement in some form was already in place at the backend since Musharraf era, which included Pakistan's nuclear capability at Saudi's disposal. In his book "War", Bob Woodward mentions a meeting between MBS and Senator Lindsey Graham where MBS visibly frustrated with the US security guarantees suggest: “I don’t need uranium to make a bomb; I’ll just buy one from Pakistan.” Basically, through the announcement of this deal, Saudi has gone nuclear without ever having to build a bomb.

2. Saudi Anxiety > US Assurances: What is significant about this defense pact is the formal announcement which reflects strategic anxiety and posturing from the Saudi side that is indicative of Saudi's ever-growing frustration with the US over security guarantees which came to full realisation after Israel's attack on Qatar. The Saudi's wanted to diversify its security risk for sometime, and the Israel attack on Qatar gave it a solid opportunity and justification. Israel's recklessness has just caused a major loss to the US interest in the Middle East - something for the US to think about.

3. US Possible Approaches: From the US side there could be 2 possibilities: A) It tacitly bless this deal to allay Saudi concerns over US falling short on its security guarantees or B) US was blindsided on this, and the new arrangement instantly makes Pakistan a potential threat to the US interests in the region. It could also be a mix of both, and there are specific metrics that could help understand which is more plausible. The question is: does this deal serve the US regional interest?

4. It's really not bilateral: This defense pact has very little to do with Pakistan as per se, and more to do with Saudi's view of shifting geopolitics, waning trust in American leadership, and most importantly, a realisation by Saudi's that a multi-polar world has emerged sooner than expected. Through Pakistan, Saudis have instantly secured 2 things: 1) Nuclear advantage and 2) Access to Chinese security and defense orbit. The Saudi-Pakistan Mutual Defense Agreement is less to do with bilateral Saudi-Pakistan relations, but mostly an outcome of Saudi's changing threat matrix, priorities and concerns which may or may not entirely work in Pakistan's favour. The urgency of this agreement, bypassing Pakistan's entire parliament, and institutions is an important data point to indicate how really one-sided this mutual defense agreement is. One way to think about it is by asking: Will Saudi come to Pakistan's aid if India attacks Pakistan? Will Pakistan come to aid for Saudi if Iran attacks Saudi Arabia? The answers to that complicate the overly simplistic mutual defense agreement.

5. What's in it for Pakistan? For Pakistan, the defense pact could be a potential blessing and curse. It instantly helps the military regime in Pakistan with its liquidity, energy and legitimacy problems in the short term, but given Pakistan's high exposure to geopolitical risks, this could create new forms of instabilities due to Pakistan's formal entry into the Middle Eastern security theatre. For the geopolitical obsessed elite in Pakistan they may have signed an agreement that gives them short-term relief but at a possible huge cost of long term instability and risk exposure.

Questions:

For Saudi Arabia: Can it really exert independent posturing, remove US reliance, and diversification of security risks?

For the US: Does the Saudi-Pak deal in some way benefit the US, or adds to the pain?

For Pakistan: Can it keep up the deal without burning itself in the process?

🇵🇰 IMRAN KHAN: PAKISTAN IS LIVING THROUGH ITS WORST DICTATORSHIP

From Adiala Jail, Imran Khan delivered his most scathing message yet, accusing Army Chief Asim Munir of imposing “the worst form of dictatorship” in Pakistan.

Imran alleged the May 9, 2023, events were orchestrated by Munir, calling them his “insurance policy.”

He said Munir, not Shehbaz Sharif, is the real power in Pakistan, pointing to Trump’s invitation as proof.

He detailed how his nephews, Shahrez and Shershah Khan, have been abducted despite no political ties, and described his wife, Bushra Bibi, as being kept in solitary confinement for 8 months under deplorable conditions, including electric shocks, polluted water, and physical abuse.

Imran accused Faisal Vawda of spreading lies that Bushra would leave him, claiming she resisted pressure to do so.

“The judiciary has been destroyed, the media silenced, and the police criminalized.”

Imran also added that shameless judges are complicit. He declared he would neither bow down nor accept this tyranny and vowed to continue struggling for Haqeeqi Azadi.

Turning to governance, Imran directed Ali Amin Gandapur to petition the Supreme Court for permission to meet him, saying KP’s government must resist federal military operations and drone strikes, which he claimed only worsen terrorism.

He said Afghan refugees were being expelled in a humiliating manner against Islamic and humanitarian principles.

On politics, Imran rejected contesting by-elections on seats vacated through May 9 convictions, calling them fabricated, but confirmed PTI will contest Hammad Azhar’s seat, vacated by his father’s passing.

He announced a grand rally in Peshawar to protest “fascism” and promised that unity would bring eventual victory.
