INSIDE ‘STRANGE RULES’ → An exploration of Protocol Art at Palazzo Diedo by Primavera De Filippi @yaoeo

Protocol Art starts with an idea: what if the artwork isn't the object, but the system that produces it? Strange Rules, on view at Palazzo Diedo in Venice, is an exhibition that frames this as a movement in its own right, gathering works by Harold Cohen, @trevorpaglen, @hollyherndon and @matdryhurst, @_terra0, Fabien Giraud, and others who have handed creative agency to systems, networks, and code.

We're sharing an essay written by one of the artists in the show, Primavera De Filippi, that traces the lineage behind Protocol Art and asks what it really means to be an author when the work keeps making itself long after you've left the room.
