@MadsDavies And it makes a huge difference during an interregnum if you have people with that expertise. It can make such a difference if church wardens and others have the knowledge and skills to maintain momentum during vacancy.
@MadsDavies 1. Say it as it is. Otherwise the challenges will come out later in the process and people will withdraw. 2. Good pictures can say a lot, and so can real quotes from the congregation. 3. Be clear what is essential and what might be helpful in the new person.
@MadsDavies I wouldn’t agree with that - my Diocese has one of the largest growth in children for 2025. Most children don’t start with Sunday - we’re using messy church, muddy, bubble, etc. And using our relationship with CofE schools more effectively. It can happen, but rarely by accident.
@WalkerMarcus And listing will add to the time, money and expertise required to look after a currently unlisted church building making it more likely they will end up not used for Christian worship
@OSacrumCorIesu I think we probably do know the factors - but some of the answers don’t make easy reading. You do need to look at all the numbers together, e.g. some of our numbers last year indicated growth was coming from existing people attending a bit more often.
Great @ChurchTimes conference hosted by @MadsDavies with fascinating speakers all of whom had insightful experience what they had seen locally, and how they had responded. Lots of food for thought for @CofEPortsmouth
Controversial(?) list from David Goodhew at @ChurchTimes “Springtime for the C of E: where are we seeing growth?” conference.
“Is it springtime in the C of E? Yes, in quite a few places; others not so much. But churches can still grow in the chill winds of secular Britain.”
@MadsDavies It is a lot of work - I’m working on a bid. But having good missional design, project plan, budget, outcomes, etc, that everyone shares multiplies the chances of success, and means you can celebrate when it happens. I would say looking at ways to grow the Kingdom is core work.
@MadsDavies I’m worried that I’m responsible for a large chunk of that increase! Hopefully no one has access to my MyWaitrose card data to say how many I’ve eaten over a year.
@MadsDavies@MadsDavies I could give you other similar examples - but if the Statements of Need and Significance are robust and take account of policies then the DAC and others are much more likely to give a quick and positive recommendation - and the Parish can move forward how they wish
@Thedustdolly@HavantBorough@hantsconnect @HavantPolice It’s a @HantsPolice matter. Although their online form doesn’t seem to be working. Police can prosecute - offence warrants up to £1,000 fine. https://t.co/Jwg9BGCg4y
@john_cope Quite right John - was in the DfE when skills went to the Department for Innovation universities and skills. It didn’t work at all and made 14-19 routes more complex
@MadsDavies@thevicarswife@WalkerMarcus As a “SMMIB-funded” person, we’re already achieving rapid progress in @CofEPortsmouth helping Parishes accelerate their mission plans. Come and see what we’re doing - across all traditions, in all corners of the Diocese
@matthew_barber That’s a really good summary I concur with Matthew - a big unitary delivering statutory services (mostly specified by government / legislation anyway) and Parishes doing the non-statutory things that add local value. It’s the way to go in most places.
@DrAlexFord Looks like wall barley. It’s really quick growing so can spring up within weeks, even if it’s been sprayed off. It’s not resistant but it’s certainly persistent!
It’s no wonder the government have decided to ditch blocking District Councils. @HavantBorough should ditch this plan now, save the money and let the new Unitary Council write something coherent. @Conservatives@AlanMakMP@kevinhollinrake
Labour government: Build, baby, build. Labour council: it’s a bit difficult, we can only manage 52% of the allocation (and eight of the sites allocated already have planning permission). It’s not even an attempt at making a compliant local plan - and gives no hope to young people.
