"This is the first synthetic species,” microbiologist J. Craig Venter told 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft in 2010. His team of scientists created a synthetic bacteria designed on a computer, with man-made DNA. Venter says that from concept to completion, it took 15 years and $40 million to make.
Venter, who died this week at 79, was one of the most famous scientists in the world, known for his pioneering work in deciphering the human genetic code.

Happy Lantern Festival (元宵节, Yuán Xiāo Jié)! The festival is a beautiful Chinese tradition celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. It falls on the first full moon of the lunar year. This year the festival is on March 3rd. Lantern Festival dates back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty, originating from Buddhist practices of lighting lanterns to honor Buddha, and it has evolved into a joyful celebration of reunion, hope, and new beginnings.
