Statement from Mr Phantom’s Team
Last night’s installation, ‘Herd Mentality’ was an artwork, not a political protest or demonstration.
The 50 participants dressed in black and wearing Union Jack face coverings were deliberately presented as a collective to explore how quickly individuals can become part of a crowd, and how quickly we make assumptions about people simply because of the group they appear to belong to.
Mr Phantom is not politically aligned to any party, and the work was not intended to support or oppose any candidate. The political backdrop simply provided the setting in which the idea of herd mentality could be explored most powerfully.
Mr Phantom believes strongly in the values of democracy and the right to peaceful protest. This living art installation in Clacton-on-Sea, building on his previous work Blind Nationalism (2025), seeks to highlight what he believes is an increasing herd mentality within modern society and the way collective thinking can stifle independent thought.
The suggestion that those involved were simply “yobs” proves the point of the work, how quick certain sections of the media jumped to a conclusion that fitted in with their agenda.
‘Herd Mentality’ was designed to make people question how we follow, how we categorise others, and how easily we can become part of the herd ourselves.
No politician or political movement speaks for everyone. The events surrounding yesterday’s by-election are a reminder that democracy is made up of many different voices, opinions and perspectives.
The intention was never to tell people what to think, but to give them something to think about.
Mr Phantom hopes people will choose to engage with politics at all levels as citizens, not sheep.
