Here’s a thought experiment I tried out recently that humbled me.

You are teleported back to ancient Rome, Any period. You have one goal, to advance civilizational knowledge as much as you can.

The answer for 99% of people is basically nothing, the answer for me is the same. I could teach them more advanced mathematical concepts, like zero, and the foundations of algebra and calculus, and maybe how to build a battery or something, but other than that? Nothing.

I know an engine works by igniting gasoline and and releasing it, but they don’t even know what gasoline it, how they could even find or distill the crude oil is something that I could never explain to the romans.

I could probably advance medicine a good amount, you couldn’t prove it but explaining germs could save millions of lives and would be revolutionary for medicine.

But other than that… nothing I can think of.

Civilization is centuries of layered knowledge, I only understand the surface level aspect, same for most people, I need to learn more.

But this is also a double sided coin, there is so much that is trivial to modern humans that would be impossible to explain to a Roman, for example, production lines.

There’s also mechanical things like gears and leverage are unknown concepts that would advance engineering by centuries.

Again, I know I know nothing, I need to learn more. What else is there to do?
