May 8, 2026. Eight hours into the hearing. Four men sat together along the witness wall — U.S. Representatives Cleo Fields and Troy Carter, alongside former Representatives Cedric Richmond and William Jefferson.

Every African American elected to Congress from Louisiana since Reconstruction. Everyone. In the same room. At the same time.

That has never happened before. Not once in the 153 years between P.B.S. Pinchback's brief 1872 governorship and that Friday afternoon.

The room held a number that took a century and a half to assemble. The bills on the agenda were drafted to subtract from it.

The newest Pattern Hunters dispatch is my attempt to read SB 407, Callais, and the 350-year game that has put Louisiana exactly here — again — for the third time in a generation. Bacon's Rebellion. Tony Brown was a pioneering broadcaster who helped redefine what public television could be. Through "Tony Brown's Journal," he created a space for thoughtful, substantive conversations that informed and challenged generations of viewers.

He also shaped generations of journalists as the founding dean of Howard University's School of Communications and later dean of Hampton University's School of Journalism and Communications.

We learned of his passing while we were on the air tonight. I'm grateful to our team for making sure we could honor a true broadcasting pioneer before we signed off.
