The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is dedicated to advancing neurological surgery and promoting the highest quality of patient care.
Every diagnosis begins with a person. Every procedure requires extraordinary precision. Every outcome has the power to change a life.
Today marks the start of #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth.
Throughout August, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons will celebrate this year's theme, Precision That Changes Lives, by sharing the stories, people and innovations that define one of medicine's most demanding specialties.
You'll go behind the scenes of neurosurgery to see the dedication, training and teamwork behind every operation. We'll highlight how new technologies and groundbreaking research are expanding what's possible for patients. We'll share stories of resilience, recovery and hope, while recognizing the neurosurgeons, care teams, researchers, educators and advocates working every day to advance neurological care.
Whether you've been touched by neurosurgery as a patient, caregiver, physician, trainee, industry partner or supporter, your voice is part of this story.
Join us throughout the month. Watch, learn, share and help shine a light on the expertise, compassion and innovation that change lives every day.
Visit the Neurosurgery Awareness Month hub to explore resources and learn how you can participate: https://t.co/ewbHVLAvrR
To our neurosurgical community: We invite you to help tell the story of our specialty. Share your experiences, your patients' successes, your research, innovations, educational moments, advocacy efforts and the people who inspire you. Use #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth so we can celebrate your contributions and amplify the incredible work happening across the field. Together, we can help the world better understand the impact of neurosurgery.

It was great to see some of our exceptional AANS/CNS Washington Committee leaders with @physicianhosp over the weekend at its national conference focused on putting physicians back in the driver’s seat and strengthening the patient-physician relationship.
Congress got it wrong with Section 6001. It’s time to repeal it and let all hospitals compete on a level playing field.
Patients vote with their feet. Let them decide.

“I’m just a pediatric brain surgeon, so what do I know, right?”
One of our own, Catherine Mazzola, MD, JD, was featured on @LastWeekTonight as John Oliver took on @UnitedHealthGrp’s cradle-to-grave health care system.
Dr. Mazzola’s story puts the problem in stark terms: after UHG-owned @Change_HC was hacked and payments to her pediatric neurosurgery practice stopped, UHG-owned @Optum provided her with a loan to keep the practice afloat, then sought repayment while the practice was still struggling to get paid. That is vertical integration at its most perverse.
And hers was just one piece of a much bigger story.
It’s time to close the loopholes that have allowed this degree of consolidation and vertical integration in health care, and take a hard look at the conflicts created when the same corporate enterprise can sit on so many sides of a patient’s care.

How is AI changing the way neurosurgeons learn?
In a new AANS Neurosurgeon article, Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc, President and CEO of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), explores how neurosurgeons can use AI to curate personalized, just-in-time education—bringing relevant learning closer to the moment it’s needed.

The AANS mourns the passing of Donald F. Dohn, MD, FAANS(L), a giant of neurosurgery whose remarkable life and career helped shape the specialty for generations.
Dr. Dohn’s impact extended far beyond the operating room. During his distinguished career, he trained and mentored more than 45 neurosurgeons and fellows and helped advance neurosurgical residency education beyond the traditional apprenticeship model. His commitment to mentorship, education and service left an enduring influence on countless neurosurgeons and the patients they went on to serve.
A dedicated leader in organized neurosurgery, Dr. Dohn was one of the few individuals to serve as president of both the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, in 1971, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, in 1978.
Last year, as Dr. Dohn approached his 100th birthday, colleagues reflected on a life defined by wisdom, character, compassion and service. Today, we remember that extraordinary legacy and the profound mark he leaves on our community. https://t.co/IjQsRkhc3B
The AANS extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Dohn’s family, friends, colleagues and the many neurosurgeons he mentored throughout his life.
