I'm devastated by news that former parliamentarian Zeyar Thaw and longtime activist Ko Jimmy were executed with two others today. UN Member States must honor their lives by making this depraved act a turning point for the world's response to this crisis. My statement attached.
While millions in Myanmar mark the 1-year anniversary of an illegal coup with a Silent Strike, the rest of us should be raising our voices for a stronger, more responsible international response to a junta that is functioning as a criminal enterprise stealing a nation's future.
Facing massive peaceful protests, Myanmar's junta seems to fall back on the oldest trick in the book:
1. Send thugs armed for violence.
2. Next it may use their violence as an excuse to stop the protests.
We see through that. It should rein in its thugs. https://t.co/DyGfh28wG1
Myanmar's military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was already wanted for directed crimes against humanity against Rohingya Muslims. Now he's also wanted for mounting a coup and overthrowing Myanmar's democracyc. https://t.co/Vcy5Xsj2jP
“Stop kidnapping at night" is the latest message from Myanmar anti-coup protesters. “Our nights aren’t safe anymore” and “Myanmar military is kidnapping people at night” have circulated widely on social media. https://t.co/mjqRTmT1gt
"We don't accept their self-proclaimed government"
Teachers and students in Myanmar are joining a growing civil disobedience movement in protest against the military coup

Saying that the Myanmar military's coup was "not wise" (a truism if I ever heard one) is enough to get Aung San Suu Kyi's aide Win Htein arrested. That's a sign of the generals running scared. https://t.co/qYFqusRHMg
Security Council expresses deep concern over state of emergency imposed in Myanmar by the military and calls for immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and others who were detained arbitrarily. https://t.co/WZxeXqBdm4
It is absolutely unacceptable to reverse the results of the elections and the will of the people of Myanmar.
I hope that democracy will be able to make progress again. Prisoners must be released & the constitutional order must be reestablished.
The members of @UN Security Council today expressed deep concern over the situation in #Myanmar. They called for the immediate release of all those detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. https://t.co/RxVCTTXaGN
