The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all.

A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue.

A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310.

These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it.

The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.

A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone.

@ThePuneMirror @Dev_Fadnavis @mohol_murlidhar @CMOMaharashtra - Most Pune footpaths are completely occupied by hawkers. And you continue to provide them legal licenses to operate, so pedestrians have to risk their lives.

@Medha_kulkarni @narendramodi @AmitShah @NitinNabin @moefcc @Dev_Fadnavis @RaviDadaChavan And yet the #MAHA govt has identified 15 days in a year on which speakers are allowed to blare in public places until midnight. Law and order subject with the state feels like a monumental mistake. Police don't or can't help. Don't know the truth. #Kothrud #Pune

@safalniveshak Looks like a commercial decision. MRI machine costs a fortune and an idle machine is just a waste of money. There might be patients who can wait for the MRI and are very price sensitive even when it comes to medical treatment. Disclaimer: I'm not from healthcare sector

[Ashutosh @aashutosh_]

@Medha_kulkarni That's shocking. So much apathy from the administration that nothing was done all these years.

@ECISVEEP @SpokespersonECI @HMOIndia @PMOIndia @AmitShah @narendramodi @Dev_Fadnavis @CMOMaharashtra I struggle to understand how the 2002 #SIR was even conducted that so many people were left out. Even people who have 1994 election cards are missing from the 2002 #SIR. That's a shame and an unnecessary hassle.

[Ashutosh @aashutosh_]

@ECISVEEP @SpokespersonECI Unable to find names of my society and neighbourhood itself from the 2002 #SIR #Maharasthra list. Gone thru both online search and PDF lists. What's going on. @HMOIndia @PMOIndia @AmitShah @narendramodi @Dev_Fadnavis

[Ashutosh @aashutosh_]

@ECISVEEP @SpokespersonECI @HMOIndia @PMOIndia @AmitShah @narendramodi @Dev_Fadnavis @CMOMaharashtra - you need to intervene as well since #SIR process has been started in #Maharashtra. Why make it painful and lengthy by making people pursue the longer route of hearings. First ensure that the old lists are complete.
