I’m so proud to have been part of this process trying to simplify our practice, making us more efficient, more sustainable without increasing risk to our patients.

What do patients fear most about operations
‘Will I wake up?’
#NAP7 report from @RCoANews answers this.
-who will
-who is at risk of not
-what are the numbers?
Eg cardiac arrest during all surgery
1: 3000
Fit & well, elective surgery
Cardiac arrest <1 : 10,000
Death <1 : 130,000
Frail patients
Cardiac arrest 1 : 1200
Death 1 : 2000
What is a perioperative cardiac arrest - most commonly described by patients as “dying during surgery’.
They’re not wrong: it’s when the circulation stops, CPR is required & death will occur if not rapidly resolved.
Great news that resuscitation rates are higher (75% resuscitated, 59% alive when reported to the project) than for other forms of cardiac arrest.
But much higher risk for some groups
-neonates
-infants
-the frail
-emergencies
-out of hours & weekends
-some surgeries
The report covers the whole gamut of perioperative cardiac arrest including
-risk factors
-causes
-outcomes
-quality of care
-patient’s story
-patient & lay perspective
-DNACPR decisions
-ethnicity
-obesity
-independent sector

Allison Felker describes the characteristics of women who died, emphasising the contribution of cardiovascular causes, COVID-19 and thromboembolism. Maternal suicide remains the leading direct cause of death between 6 weeks and a year after the end of pregnancy.
It is our belief that prosecuting a woman for ending their pregnancy will never be in the public interest. Read our full position here: https://t.co/8Rm5cmWY8s
